The H Zero PS Opus II is the SACD player belonging to Heritage Opus II, a series from the Swiss firm Orpheus Lab. That line was introduced in 2024 and holds three models - this SACD player, a stereo preamplifier and a pair of monoblock power amplifiers. The player is paired with an external supply unit, and its US price is USD 54,900.
Key specs that matter
A D&M SACD mechanism plays SACD and standard CD, and also handles CD-R as well as CD-RW media. A single USB B socket takes computer audio as PCM at up to 384 kHz and 32 bit and DSD up to DSD256 from a computer. Outputs are one balanced pair at 4.8 V RMS with 50 ohm output impedance and one unbalanced pair at 2.4 V RMS with 25 ohm. Orpheus Lab quotes THD+N below 0.0003 percent (-110.5 dB) at 1 kHz, crosstalk below -126 dB between channels and a dynamic range above 126 dB on both output types. The main unit is 440 mm wide, 440 mm deep and 146 mm tall, or 175 mm on its spikes, and the stack with its power supply reaches 301 mm. Total weight with the supply is 52 kg.
Engineering and use context
Conversion is a true dual mono layout with eight DACs per channel in an 8-4-4-1 arrangement. The eight chips run synchronously in current mode and are grouped in pairs at the current to voltage stage, giving four voltage groups. Each group passes through its own Revival Filter, and the four are then summed through metal-film resistors of 0.1 percent tolerance into one output per channel. Timing for the transport comes from the Tempo clock module, taken from the Maestro range of the brand and built around a high-precision quartz. The output level can be trimmed from -16 dB to 0 dB in 0.1 dB steps, and absolute phase can be set to 0 or 180 degrees. The supply runs on 100, 115 or 230 V AC within 10 percent, draws up to 100 W in use and under 1 W in standby, and silences its outputs by itself if the mains supply sags.
Pairing
Because the level is adjustable in fine steps, the player can drive power amplifiers straight from its outputs, though its natural partner is the H Two 33BD Opus II preamplifier, whose balanced inputs accept up to 18.4 V RMS. The balanced output suits the XLR inputs of the H Three monoblocks in a complete Heritage system. The M800 version of those monoblocks has a response from 5 Hz to 90 kHz and 800 W into 4 ohm, while the larger M1400 adds a 2400 VA supply. For a system without a separate preamplifier, the A Four I200 integrated from the Absolute line accepts on its XLR inputs exactly the balanced output level of this player, so no level trim is needed.
Alternatives
The Orpheus Lab A Zero PS is the SACD player of the Absolute line, which draws on technology developed for the Heritage range.
