The Isis is the reference CD player from Rega of the United Kingdom, built in a custom solid anodised aluminium case that weighs 19 kg. It is the solid-state version of the Isis design, with discrete Class A operational amplifiers and filters in the analogue stage, and it loads discs manually from the top under a black chrome lid that matches the black chrome front fascia.
Key specs that matter
Frequency response is 17 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 0.1 dB, while THD plus noise stays under 0.0013%. The RCA outputs deliver 2.2 V and the balanced XLR outputs 4.4 V, both at an output impedance of 560 ohm, and a fully balanced signal path runs from the DACs to the XLR sockets. The laser works at a wavelength of 780 nm and the digital sampling frequency is 44.1 kHz. Power consumption is 23 W. Mains fuses are T500 mA for the analogue and digital sections on 230 V, or T1A each on 115 V. The case measures 434 mm wide, 112 mm high and 350 mm deep, and Rega specifies an operating space of 434 x 200 x 350 mm so that the top-loading lid can open.
Engineering and use context
The player converts with twin Burr-Brown PCM1794 DACs running in parallel in dual mono mode, driving a discrete Class A current-to-voltage stage. The power architecture uses separate 50 VA transformers for the digital and analogue sections, giving galvanic isolation between them. The supply combines audio grade electrolytics with smoothing capacitors of Rega's own K Power type. The case work is custom designed and CNC machined from aluminium to isolate the digital circuitry from vibration. An intelligent disc analysis system sets laser focus, tracking and beam size individually for each disc before playback. A galvanically isolated, double-clocked USB input accepts 16-bit audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz from a computer, so internet radio, MP3 or WMA files can be played through the same converters. Rega covers the case against manufacturing defects with a lifetime warranty.
Pairing
A CNC-machined remote control is supplied, and Rega Couple interconnects come in the box for connecting the player to an amplifier. A coaxial digital output at 0.5 V and 75 ohm and an optical Toslink output can feed an external converter. Beyond disc playback, the USB input turns the player into a converter for computer audio.
Alternatives
The Rega Valve Isis shares the same transport and USB sections but replaces the solid-state output with a valve differential stage using 5814A and ECC88 tubes.
