The Esoteric Grandioso N1 is a streamer with a built-in DAC and part of the Japanese maker's top Grandioso series. It takes its network module, the Esoteric Network Engine G4, from the recently introduced Grandioso N1T network transport and combines it with the Master Sound Discrete DAC G2, a converter designed and built in-house from selected discrete parts rather than a packaged DAC chip. A standard grey finish is offered, with an N1 Gold version reserved for Japan on 100 V mains. Suggested retail price is USD 45,000 in silver.
Key specs that matter
The DAC G2 uses a new FPGA running a multi-level delta-sigma conversion scheme with modulation up to 64-bit and 512 Fs. It accepts DSD up to 22.5 MHz and PCM up to 768 kHz at 32 bits, applying separate algorithms for each format. The balanced XLR output delivers a maximum of 5.0 V rms at 50 ohm, and the RCA output 2.5 V rms at 18 ohm, both measured at 1 kHz into 10 kOhm. With DSD 2.8 MHz at 0 dB the frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 30 kHz at minus 3 dB, signal-to-noise ratio is 113 dB A-weighted and distortion is 0.001 percent at 1 kHz. Power draw is 38 W, falling to 0.3 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
The layout is fully dual mono and uses five independent linear power supplies fed by large toroidal transformers, with low-feedback discrete DC regulators. An internal Master Sound Discrete Clock in a version developed for digital products sets timing, and a 10 MHz BNC input allows locking to an outboard reference, and the Grandioso G1X clock generator is named as compatible. Network connection is via RJ45 or an SFP port for optical fibre, and USB-A and USB-C sockets accept storage drives so the unit can act as a music server. File support covers FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MQA, MP3 and AAC, and Tidal, Tidal Connect, Qobuz, Qobuz Connect, Roon and Spotify are supported for streaming. Digital inputs cover USB audio, AES/EBU, coaxial and optical, and an ES-Link5 pair carries DSD over Esoteric's own link. The multi-layer chassis rests on insulating feet first developed for the company's SACD players, measures 445 x 162 x 447 mm and weighs 27.8 kg.
Pairing
The balanced output doubles as an ES-Link analogue connection for Esoteric amplification that supports it, while the RCA pair suits any conventional line input. The N1 can also be upgraded with the optional Grandioso PS1 external power supply.
Alternatives
Within the same Grandioso range, Esoteric offers the Grandioso K1X, a disc player for SACD and CD that also works as a DAC.
