The Eidos Excellence SACD is a two-chassis disc player from Goldmund, the Geneva company active since 1978, and was announced in November 2025. Besides SACD and CD it plays recordable CDs and audio files burned to recordable DVDs in both the minus and plus formats, and a USB input turns it into a standalone converter. The player and its external power supply share a gray finish as standard, with black available on request.
Key specs that matter
Goldmund quotes a frequency range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz, with the output down 0.15 dB at 5 Hz, 0.45 dB at 24 kHz, 1.4 dB at 48 kHz and 4.3 dB at 96 kHz. The player exceeds 128 dB for both S/N and dynamic range, THD+N stays below 0.00018% at the stereo output and crosstalk is under 120 dB. Analogue outputs come as RCA and XLR, and a menu setting chooses between two levels - 2 V RMS on RCA and 4 V RMS on XLR as standard, doubling to 4 V and 8 V in the High mode. For an outboard converter there are coaxial S/PDIF, AES/EBU on XLR and TosLink optical outputs. Via USB the unit accepts PCM up to 384 kHz and DSD up to DSD512, and data discs may carry MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF and ALAC files. The player chassis measures 44 x 17 x 35.4 cm and weighs 17.2 kg, and the supply measures 44 x 13.4 x 36.9 cm at 17 kg. Power draw is 40 W from a 117 or 234 V selectable mains input.
Engineering and use context
Goldmund starts from a D&M SACD loader built into Goldmund Mechanical Grounding, which leads vibration out of the structure, and a Goldmund damper stiffens the loader. Each channel has its own DAC, and six digital filter slopes can be chosen, from Sharp to Low Disp Short Delay. The separate supply uses custom transformers and a multiphase layout that produces independent voltages for left and right, and it links to the player with the same shielded cable used by the Mimesis Excellence electronics. With hybrid discs the SACD layer outputs analogue only, while the CD layer also feeds the digital outputs, and signals arriving over USB reach those digital outputs only up to 48 kHz. The display has three themes and four brightness steps, and the unit drops to standby after an hour without use.
Pairing
The balanced outputs at the higher level suit preamplifiers built to professional line standards, while the standard setting matches ordinary consumer inputs. A computer or streamer connected over USB lets the internal converters handle file playback too.
Alternatives
The Goldmund Eidos Reference SACD is another SACD player in the same Eidos family.
