The CD11MKII is a compact disc player from Rotel that plays only CDs, including discs holding MP3 files, from a proprietary Rotel transport held in a heavy steel chassis. Its coaxial digital output lets it work as a disc transport feeding a separate DAC, and Rotel builds it in black as well as in silver. The rated heat output is 40 BTU per hour.

Key specs that matter

Rotel chose a Texas Instruments PCM5102A chip rated for 32-bit and 384 kHz, followed by custom-tuned digital low pass filter circuits. Rotel quotes frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz within 0.5 dB, total harmonic distortion plus noise of 0.009% at 1 kHz and intermodulation distortion of the same 0.009%. Signal to noise ratio exceeds 125 dB with A weighting, dynamic range is above 99 dB while separation between channels beats 115 dB at 10 kHz. Channel balance is within 0.5 dB and phase linearity within 0.5 degree. The analogue output impedance is 470 ohm. Power draw is 15 W in use and under 0.5 W in standby. The case is 430 mm wide, 98 mm high and 314 mm deep with a front panel height of 80 mm, and the net weight is 6.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

A smooth tray-loading mechanism, a precise laser pickup and a silent-running motor controller make up the disc drive. A linear power supply provides isolated outputs for the motor control circuit and for the audio circuits, so that the mechanism and the analogue stage do not share a supply rail. The coaxial output delivers 0.5 V peak to peak into a 75 ohm load and can decode LPCM signals up to 24-bit and 192 kHz in the SPDIF format. Playback is controlled from front panel buttons or the included remote, and a graphic display shows playback status together with disc metadata such as title and artist.

Pairing

Its analogue RCA pair plugs into a spare line socket of an integrated amp or a preamp. Owners who already have an external DAC can use the coaxial link instead and let the CD11MKII act purely as a transport. A 12 V trigger input on the back allows the player to be powered up and down by an amplifier fitted with a trigger output, and an RS232 connector opens it to control systems in larger installations. Power requirements are 120 V at 60 Hz for the USA and 230 V at 50 Hz for Europe.

Alternatives

The Rotel CD14MKII is a CD player in the same chassis size with a 32-bit Texas Instruments converter, rated at 0.0035% distortion and over 118 dB signal to noise ratio.
