The 3510 CD Player is a top-loading disc spinner from Exposure, the British electronics maker, and it arrived in March 2024 as the final piece of the 3510 range. That series first appeared in 2021 with an integrated amplifier replacing the older 3010S2D, and it already covered pre, stereo power and mono power amplifiers before this player joined. Launch pricing was GBP 2,500, EUR 2,999 and AUD 3,299, with black and titanium finishes and a three-year guarantee.

Key specs that matter

Conversion relies on two Burr-Brown PCM1704 multibit chips in a dual mono layout, one per channel. Each chip accepts 20-bit and 24-bit words at up to 96 kHz with eight-times oversampling and carries a 120 dB signal-to-noise figure on its own datasheet. For the complete player Exposure quotes 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.25 dB, harmonic distortion of 0.007% and noise more than 100 dB below signal. The case measures 440 mm wide, 90 mm tall and 300 mm deep, weighs 5 kg and draws 25 W from mains set at the factory for 110/120 V or 220/240 V.

Engineering and use context

A Sony KSS-213C mechanism reads the disc, which is placed by hand under a lid and held by a magnetic puck. A high-stability crystal oscillator acts as the clock reference to keep jitter low. The toroidal transformer is a custom part with separate windings for the transport and for the audio circuitry, and each section also gets its own dedicated regulator, with several stages of regulation in total. After the DACs the analogue signal passes through an Exposure-designed discrete transistor output stage rather than an op-amp buffer. Double-sided circuit boards handle layout and screening, while the aluminium casework and extruded front panel are shaped to limit resonance and stray electromagnetic fields. Controls on the fascia are kept minimal. The backlit reverse-video display sits behind a red filter and can be turned off from the supplied remote handset, and there is no app control.

Pairing

Analogue output leaves through a pair of RCA sockets feeding a line input on the partnering amplifier. Coaxial S/PDIF and Toslink optical outputs let the machine run purely as a transport into a separate converter, including Exposure's own DAC. Its full-width slim case match the other 3510 boxes, so it stacks with the 3510 Integrated Amplifier or the 3510 Pre-Amplifier on one shelf.

The Exposure XM CD is a smaller top-loader that combines a 3010S2-derived transport section with a single PCM1716 96 kHz/24-bit converter and was priced at GBP 1,200.
