The SUB12 is an active 12 inch subwoofer from VULKKANO, the Spanish audio brand from Valencia whose range also includes active speakers of the A series, the ARC range, the D4 and PRO4, table speakers of the T series, the TD10 and TD20 turntables and HC series headphones. It is designed for music and home cinema in small to medium rooms, and VULKKANO names its A6 ARC active speaker as the ideal companion. The price on the maker's site is EUR 229.99, and the warranty runs for three years.

Key specs that matter

VULKKANO fits a 12 inch woofer with an external magnet, a rubber surround and an impedance of 2 ohm, behind a black fabric cover. The built-in amplifier delivers 200 W RMS, and power consumption is also 200 W from 100 to 240 V AC mains at 50 or 60 Hz. The full frequency range is 20 to 200 Hz, and the crossover can be set anywhere from 40 to 200 Hz. Noise is at least 80 dB below the signal, THD is no more than 1% and dispersion is 90 to 120 degrees. The input is an RCA line and LFE socket. The cabinet is MDF with a black oak finish and measures 362 mm wide, 503 mm deep and 411 mm high, with a weight of 15.35 kg.

Engineering and use context

With its large cone, the SUB12 can shift the air that deep notes require without extreme excursion. The low-impedance voice coil draws more current from the amplifier at a given voltage, which lets the built-in amplifier deliver its power into the driver efficiently. The rubber surround allows long cone travel and is resistant to ageing. The adjustable crossover decides where the subwoofer takes over from the main speakers, so it can be set high for small satellites and lower for speakers with more bass of their own. Turning the phase control brings the subwoofer into step with the main speakers at the crossover point, so that their outputs add up instead of partly cancelling. Volume sets the balance between subwoofer and speakers. The LFE input takes the dedicated low-frequency channel from an AV receiver in a multichannel system, while the line input suits stereo amplifiers with a subwoofer output. VULKKANO describes setup in three steps, connecting power, running the RCA cable and setting volume and crossover. The box contains a manual, an RCA cable and an EU mains cable.
