The Tribe Solution Sub is a slim sealed subwoofer from Totem Acoustic, the loudspeaker maker from Montreal, Canada, and part of the company's Tribe range of compact speakers. At only 11.5 cm deep, it is designed to be placed horizontally, vertically or on its back under furniture. It succeeds the earlier Tribe Sub, which used an external amplifier.

Key specs that matter

Two 8 inch woofers are fitted. Their cones are made of high-tensile spun fibreglass strands with a top coating, bonded to a cellulose core, and anodised aluminium dust caps help dissipate heat. The motors use oversized ferrite magnets, and the surrounds are butyl rubber. A custom-designed 500 W Class D amplifier is built in. Frequency response is 26 Hz to 200 Hz ±3 dB. The crossover is variable from 40 Hz to 120 Hz with a slope of 24 dB per octave, and phase is adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees. Two EQ presets, High Impact and Natural Bass, are available. Inputs are stereo RCA, LFE and a wireless connection through the optional LINK transmitter. The cabinet measures 610 mm wide, 336 mm high with feet and 115 mm deep, and weighs 17.38 kg. Satin black and satin white finishes are offered, each with a magnetic grille.

Engineering and use context

The box is closed, so trapped air rather than a port loads the rear of the cones. Totem uses two drivers to obtain enough cone area within such a shallow cabinet, where a single large driver would not fit. The Class D amplifier runs cool, which allows it to sit inside the slim sealed cabinet without a need for ventilation. The fibreglass and cellulose cone combines a stiff outer layer with a damped core, and the aluminium dust caps draw heat away from the voice coils during long, loud passages. The three mounting options suit living rooms where a conventional cube subwoofer would be in the way, for example lying flat under a sofa or standing upright behind furniture. The wireless LINK transmitter removes the need for a cable between the source and the subwoofer.

Pairing

Within Totem's range it belongs to the Tribe family of compact speakers. An AV receiver feeds it through the LFE socket, a stereo amplifier through its preamplifier output into the RCA inputs, and the LINK transmitter replaces either cable with a wireless connection.
