The T5 is an active subwoofer from Edifier with an 8-inch driver, priced at USD 199.99. It is designed to add bass to Edifier's powered bookshelf and desktop speakers, many of which have a dedicated subwoofer output, while its line-level input and pass-through output also suit other systems.
Key specs that matter
A 220 mm (8-inch) long-throw woofer runs from a 70 W RMS closed-loop Class D amplifier using Texas Instruments electronics. Frequency response is 38 Hz to 160 Hz. Noise is at least 85 dB below the signal, A-weighted. On the rear are RCA sockets for signal in and pass-through out, with an input sensitivity of 50 mV plus or minus 20 mV. Controls cover volume, low-pass filter and phase. Its 18 mm MDF cabinet, covered in wood-grain vinyl behind a slim grille, measures 278 x 300 x 336 mm and weighs 8.56 kg.
Engineering and use context
An integrated DSP handles the low-pass filtering and phase control, which lets the crossover frequency and phase be adjusted precisely rather than through analogue filter circuits. The closed-loop Class D amplifier uses feedback to correct its output. The pass-through output sends the full-range signal on to the main speakers or another device, which lets the T5 be wired in line ahead of a pair of powered speakers without a splitter cable. The auto standby function switches the T5 off after 30 minutes without signal, which saves energy when the system is not in use. With its low input sensitivity, the subwoofer reaches full output from the relatively low signal levels of desktop speaker sub outputs. The MDF walls give a rigid enclosure for the long-throw driver. Compared with the T5s, the T5 is 1.8 kg lighter and nearly twice as deep, and its higher upper limit leaves room for a higher crossover with small desktop speakers such as the M60.
Pairing
The T5 connects to the subwoofer output of Edifier speakers such as the R1700BTs, QR65 or S880DB MKII, extending their bass below about 50 Hz. It can also be fed from an AV receiver sub output or an amplifier pre-out. In a room of about 20 m2, placing it near the main speakers makes it easier to set the low-pass filter and phase so that the bass blends with them.
Alternatives
The Edifier T5s is a slimmer 8-inch subwoofer with a front-firing driver, a 35 Hz lower limit and a vertical cabinet only 170 mm deep.
