The Sub Medium is a compact active subwoofer from Piega of Switzerland, presented in April 2022 as the bass extension for the Ace Wireless speakers but equally usable with any of the brand's passive models. It can receive its signal over a WiSA radio link or by cable, which lets it join both wireless and conventional systems. Launch prices were EUR 1,750 in silver and EUR 1,950 for the black anodised and white lacquered versions.

Key specs that matter

Inside are two 200 mm drivers fed by Class D amplification rated at 240 W at under 1 percent THD and 300 W at under 10 percent THD. Piega specifies a frequency range from 18 Hz to 160 Hz. The rounded body is 23 cm in diameter, 27 cm deep and 46.5 cm tall, and it weighs 17.5 kg. The WiSA link carries 24 bit data at 48 to 96 kHz.

Engineering and use context

The housing is made entirely of aluminium and uses a closed design without a port, with internal damping and a rounded profile that echoes the oval Ace cabinets. Signal processing reuses the digital filters and algorithms written for the Ace Wireless series, and a dynamic loudness correction is part of the DSP. For wired use the sub has unbalanced stereo RCA and balanced XLR inputs, and a balanced output on an RJ45 socket allows longer signal runs to further devices. The WiSA path is described as free of latency and works with any WiSA-enabled transmitter in plug and play fashion. Controls cover volume, crossover frequency and a phase selector with 0 and 180 degree positions. A Full or SAT switch changes the operating mode, and in SAT mode a high pass filter is switched into the path, so the main speakers receive a signal without the lowest octaves that the sub covers. The body is offered in silver, black or white lacquer, and protective covers in anthracite or grey are available as options.

Pairing

With an Ace Wireless pair the Sub Medium can be added over WiSA without a cable between sub and speakers, while in a passive system the RCA or XLR inputs take the sub output of a preamplifier, integrated amplifier or streamer. SAT mode suits small stand-mount speakers or satellites whose own bass output is limited. The narrow round footprint allows a position beside a sofa or sideboard.

Alternatives

The Piega PS 101 is a larger vented subwoofer with two 220 mm LDB woofers, a 150 W RMS amplifier and high-level speaker inputs, reaching down to 28 Hz at minus 3 dB.
