The Sub 6 is a subwoofer in the home audio range of Dynaudio, the Danish loudspeaker company. It is an active DSP subwoofer with two opposed drivers in a sealed cabinet. Its DSP holds performance maps for Dynaudio's own speakers, so it can turn a two-way system into a three-way one.

Key specs that matter

It uses two 23 cm MSP+ Hybrid drivers at opposite ends of a sealed cabinet. Amplifier power is 500 W. Frequency response is 16 Hz to 230 Hz within 3 dB. The low-pass filter is adjustable from 50 to 150 Hz or set by preset, an adjustable high-pass filter relieves the main speakers of deep bass, and phase can be set to 0 or 180 degrees. Connections are XLR and RCA pairs for both input and output. Auto on/off is fitted, standby consumption is below 0.5 W. The cabinet measures 447 x 300 x 268 mm (W x H x D), or 470 x 333 x 268 mm with base and grille, and weighs 21.5 kg. US pricing was USD 2,400.

Engineering and use context

The MSP+ Hybrid drivers are made primarily of aluminium for stiffness and designed specifically for subwoofer use. To counter the ringing aluminium can produce, a dual-action damping system combines paper on the back of the cone with a cap of Dynaudio's Magnesium Silicate Polymer on the front. Placing the two drivers at opposite ends of the cabinet cancels their reaction forces, so the cabinet does not rock under high output. The sealed enclosure gives controlled low-frequency roll-off, and the cabinet is wider than it is deep to sit discreetly against a wall. For Dynaudio speakers, the DSP applies a custom performance map made from measurements of each model, including the Contour, Confidence, Evoke, Focus, Special Forty and Evidence ranges. For other speakers, crossover frequency, gain and phase are set manually. A time delay aligns the subwoofer with the main speakers once the distances are entered, using both time and phase. Lacquer options are black satin and white satin, and the mains input accepts 100 to 120 V or 200 to 240 V. The Sub 6 was designed with the Contour 20 Black Edition in mind and suits small and medium rooms.

The Sub 6 suits Dynaudio stand-mounts such as the Contour 20 and Evoke 20, where its DSP map integrates it automatically. Its XLR inputs connect to preamplifiers or AV processors.
