The R Sub Arreté is an active subwoofer from Audiovector, the Danish company that has made loudspeakers by hand in Denmark since 1979. It belongs to the R Series and uses Audiovector's Arreté technologies, including Freedom Grounding. The company designed it for music as well as films, aiming for a subwoofer that supports the main speakers without drawing attention.
Key specs that matter
It uses a 10 in long-throw carbon driver with a 10 in downward-firing passive radiator, the ABR bass system. The amplifier is a 400 W Class AB design. Frequency response is variable from 18 to 180 Hz, and phase is adjustable from +/-180 degrees. Inputs are line-level phono and high-level Speakon, and a 5 m Speakon cable is included. The cabinet measures 39.1 x 38.4 x 37.6 cm (H x W x D). Standard finishes are African Rosewood, Black Ash, Italian Walnut and White Silk, with custom painted colours on request from GBP 800.
Engineering and use context
The ABR, auxiliary bass radiator, is an unpowered cone moved by pressure within the enclosure, extending bass without a port avoiding port noise. Firing it downward towards the floor keeps its output even in the room. The long-throw driver moves large amounts of air for its size. The cabinet uses laminated baffles, non-parallel surfaces to prevent standing waves, and Nanopore damping material, and its rounded shape adds stiffness. Voice coils use Audiovector's titanium technology. A carbon terminal plate is fitted. The high-level Speakon input takes the signal from the amplifier's speaker outputs, so the subwoofer receives the same signal and character as the main speakers. Audiovector's Freedom Grounding Concept is a separate grounding system that the company says lowers the noise floor. Its other concepts include Low Compression, which lets the diaphragms move freely under demanding conditions, No Energy Storage and Natural Crystal Structure treatment. The Individual Upgrade Concept allows owners to upgrade Audiovector products later. UK pricing was GBP 2,950, and the Polish price was PLN 13,990. A black cloth grille is included.
Pairing
The R Sub Arreté integrates with Audiovector's R Series speakers such as the R 3 Arreté. The high-level input suits amplifiers without a subwoofer output, and the line-level input suits AV receivers and preamplifiers with one.
