The PSW 505 is a Polk Audio subwoofer with a 12-inch front-firing driver and a Class D amplifier. Engineering and use context

A high-excursion cone and a high-roll surround allow the 12-inch driver to move a long way, which is needed for deep bass at high levels. Magnetic shielding dates from the era of tube televisions, when an unshielded magnet near the screen could distort the picture. Dynamic Balance is Polk's name for its approach to reducing unwanted driver resonances. The slot-loaded port is a wide, narrow opening built into the cabinet structure, which lets a large port area fit into the enclosure. Class D amplification keeps the amplifier compact and efficient. The unfiltered LFE input passes the signal straight to the amplifier, since the receiver's bass management has already filtered it, while the speaker-level terminals take the signal from an amplifier's loudspeaker outputs and pass it through the subwoofer's own filter.

Pairing

In a home cinema, the LFE socket takes the sub signal from the receiver. Stereo amplifiers with no dedicated sub output feed the speaker-level posts instead, and the low-pass filter then sets the crossover to the main speakers. Given the large driver and low extension, it fits rooms of about 20 m2 and larger.

The Polk Audio Signature Elite ES12 is a more recent 12-inch subwoofer with DSP processing and dual front ports, reaching 22 Hz.
