The PMC8 SUB is a powered studio sub by the British company PMC, designed as a low-frequency reference for studio monitoring systems. It can work as a compact stand-alone subwoofer in conventional multichannel setups, or double as an XBD cabinet and stand under a PMC6, turning that nearfield into the full-range PMC6 XBD midfield monitor. The cabinet can be placed lying flat or standing on its end, and it is finished in studio black.

Key specs that matter

A single custom 200 mm long-throw studio 8 driver is powered by one Class D amplifier rated at 300 W rms. The response runs from 25 Hz to 500 Hz within 3 dB, measured at 1 m in full space on axis. A +4 dBu input signal produces 98 dB SPL at 1 m, the maximum continuous level is 109 dB and the peak figure is 121 dB, both as quarter-space values. The effective transmission line length is 3 m. The cabinet is 266 mm high, 551 mm wide and 440 mm deep, and weighs 18.5 kg. Power consumption is 25 W at idle and 300 W at most, from an auto-switching supply of 100 to 240 V.

Engineering and use context

PMC loads the driver with its Advanced Transmission Line, which gives a gentler low-order roll-off than a conventional ported box and helps the sub blend with height and surround channels in multichannel and Dolby Atmos rooms. The same DSP engine as in the brand's active monitors handles driver protection, filtering and delay. A single XLR input switches between analogue and AES3 digital - the analogue side accepts up to +20 or +24 dBu with an input impedance of 22 kohm, while the digital side takes 16 or 24-bit signals at 18 to 192 kHz, left, right or summed, into 110 ohm. An XLR output passes a fixed 24-bit, 96 kHz AES3 signal on to the next unit, and an expansion slot is reserved for future connectivity. Adjustments include level trim of 10 dB either way, high-pass and low-pass filters from 20 to 200 Hz at 12 dB per octave, delay up to 30 ms, phase inversion, shelving filters and five bands of parametric EQ, plus three user presets. Latency is 2.4 ms. All of this is adjustable from the back of the cabinet or over RJ45 through the SoundAlign web interface.

Pairing

The dedicated XBD mode matches the sub to a pair of PMC6 monitors as one coherent system. In other setups it takes balanced line or digital feeds from a console, monitor controller or multichannel audio interface.

Alternatives

The PMC8-2 SUB is the larger subwoofer in the same studio range, using two 8-inch long-throw drivers for a higher maximum level.
