The Minx X301 is the powered subwoofer of the Cambridge Audio Minx range of compact home cinema and music speakers. It is sold on its own and also forms the bass section of the Minx S325 5.1 package, where it is combined with five Min22 satellites, 25 m of speaker wire and a 5 m RCA subwoofer lead. Cambridge Audio describes the aim as full low-end output without the need for a large cabinet.

Key specs that matter

A 300 W digital amplifier drives one 200 mm (8 inch) active cone, which is paired with a second 8-inch passive radiator. Frequency response is quoted from 31 Hz at -6 dB up to 200 Hz. The active crossover can be set anywhere between 50 Hz and 200 Hz. The cabinet measures 266 mm wide, 311 mm high and 278 mm deep, and the unit weighs 7.5 kg. Two lacquer colours are offered, gloss black and gloss white, and Cambridge Audio states the coating resists knocks and scuffs. The box holds the subwoofer, an installation guide, a safety guide and a mains lead for the buyer's region.

Engineering and use context

The powered driver faces forward, while the passive unit, which Cambridge Audio calls an auxiliary bass radiator or ABR, fires toward the floor. A digital signal processor manages equalisation and dynamic range in real time, which the maker says allows the amplifier to take more power and play louder while keeping distortion lower at high levels. The rear panel carries volume, phase and crossover frequency controls alongside a mains power switch. A standby switch chooses between Force On, where the unit stays active, and Audio Detect, where the subwoofer wakes when a signal arrives and switches off again during silence to save energy. The phase control delays the incoming signal by an amount between 0 and 180 degrees. Line outputs on the back pass the signal to a second X301 for a two-subwoofer setup.

Pairing

For a two-channel hi-fi system, the left and right line inputs take the preamplifier or integrated amplifier signal, and the variable crossover lets the X301 blend with small satellites or bookshelf models. With an AV receiver that has a dedicated sub output, the left channel input acts as the LFE connection, as in the S325 package. The Min22 satellites used in that package are the matching partners within the Minx range, and the range also includes the single-driver Min12.
