The L12 SUB is an active subwoofer from Scansonic HD, the Danish loudspeaker maker, and belongs to the L Series, a range the company expanded in December 2023 alongside the L10 centre speaker and L20 floorstander. The European price at launch was EUR 1,350. It is intended to extend the bass of L Series stereo or multichannel systems, and several units can be combined in one room for higher output.

Key specs that matter

A single custom 12 inch long-throw woofer gets its power from an internal Class A/B amplifier rated at 200 W RMS. Scansonic lists a frequency range of 25 Hz to 250 Hz. The electronic crossover can be set anywhere from 40 Hz to 160 Hz, and phase is adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees. A bass extension control and a volume control sit alongside, and the amplifier enters standby automatically when no signal is present. An RCA output passes the signal on, so a second subwoofer or a pair of main speakers can be fed from the same line. The maker gives the cabinet as 370 mm wide, 440 mm high and 400 mm deep. Buyers can pick black or walnut.

Engineering and use context

Scansonic builds the ported cabinet from MDF. A further 15 mm panel is added to the front baffle to damp vibration and resonance where the woofer is mounted. The cabinet stands on solid rubber feet that decouple it from the floor, and the woofer sits behind a magnetically attached grille in furniture-grade fabric, in keeping with the plain Scandinavian styling Scansonic applies across the L Series. Scansonic chose Class A/B amplification for this model rather than the Class D modules used in many active subwoofers. The long-throw driver gives the cone more travel. The continuously variable crossover lets the sub be joined either to small stand-mounts or to larger floorstanders such as the L-12 and L-14. Shifting phase by up to 180 degrees helps when the sub cannot be placed in line with the main speakers.

Pairing

A home cinema receiver feeds the line input from its LFE socket, while a stereo amplifier can drive it from a pre-out. Within the L Series the natural partners are the compact L-5 and L-7 monitors, where the low end of the crossover range lets the sub take over the bottom octave. Two units driven from one source through the pass-through output raise maximum level.
