KION is an active horn subwoofer handcrafted in Athens by Tune Audio, a loudspeaker company based in Voula, Attiki, Greece, whose catalogue centres on horn-loaded designs and which chooses drivers from European and Japanese makers to suit horns it designs first, rather than shaping a horn around an existing driver. The maker built it to reproduce the first octaves of the audio range in large rooms while keeping the footprint small enough for systems with little free floor area, and it sits beside the bigger PULSE as one of two powered subwoofers in the range.

Key specs that matter

Its single 12-inch sub-bass woofer receives power from an internal 100 W switching amplifier embedded in the cabinet, so the woofer needs no separate power amplifier. Tune Audio gives a sensitivity of 100 dB at 8 ohm and a maximum output of about 120 dB SPL, depending on placement. The cabinet is a tall, narrow column 170 cm high, 33 cm wide and 39 cm long, weighing 45 kg.

Engineering and use context

KION loads its woofer with a horn tuned to the lowest acoustic limits, and the horn fires down toward the floor. The enclosure is made of grade A Baltic birch plywood and is fully braced along its length to suppress unwanted resonances. On the control side, the owner gets a volume adjustment, a phase control variable through 0 to 360 degrees and a crossover frequency adjustable from 30 Hz to 120 Hz. A parametric bass boost adds 0 to 6 dB at a frequency chosen between 20 Hz and 50 Hz. The design allows several KION units to be used together in one system, and Tune Audio aims it at stereo listeners as well as home theatre owners. Finishes follow the same custom approach as the rest of the Tune Audio line, with any paint colour or natural wood veneer available to order.

Pairing

KION accepts its signal in two ways - through stereo line-level RCA sockets with an input impedance of 10 kOhm, or through high-level speaker binding posts with an input impedance of 1 kOhm, the first taking a line-level signal and the second a speaker-level signal. In the Tune Audio catalogue it is listed alongside the passive AVATON, EPITOME, ANIMA, MARVEL and PRIME horn models, and for the EPITOME, MARVEL and PRIME the company specifies low to mid powered amplifiers with low or no feedback.

Alternatives

The Tune Audio PULSE is the larger active horn subwoofer, using a 15-inch woofer with the same switching amplifier in a 95 kg cabinet rated for around 130 dB.
