The INVICTA 60 is an infrasonic subwoofer with a 60 inch driver from Deus Audio Machines of Salt Lake City, Utah, a company set up by the audio development firm Swarm, which has more than 25 years in the industry. The current version is the Invicta 60 MK2, the company's top infrasonic model for cinema and studio use, with a list price of USD 170,000. Deus carries out all production in-house, from FEA modelling, motor machining and voice coil winding to carbon-fibre cone fabrication, enclosure casting, CNC work and electronics.

Key specs that matter

Deus fits a dual voice coil of 1.80 ohm per coil and a one-piece carbon-fibre cone laid up by hand over a Nomex honeycomb core, with cone break-up at 265 Hz. Linear excursion is 33 mm one way. Power handling is 20,000 W peak and 10,000 W continuous. Sensitivity is 105.0 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m in half space, and maximum level is 146.0 dB peak and 143.0 dB continuous at 1 m. Response is 20 to 230 Hz without DSP and 12 to 230 Hz with a Linkwitz Transform, with extension to 12 Hz at -3 dB, 9.26 Hz at -6 dB and 7.95 Hz at -10 dB. Group delay is 19.2 ms at the -3 dB point. The enclosure measures 749 mm deep and 1788 mm wide and high, and the subwoofer weighs 420 kg net.

Engineering and use context

The MASS Drive ultra-linear motor works without a basket, as the driver and enclosure form one rigid structure, so the forces of the motor pass straight into the cabinet. The Nomex honeycomb core makes the large carbon-fibre cone stiff and light enough to move as a piston up to its break-up frequency. The sealed alignment gives a gentle roll-off of 12 dB per octave, which a Linkwitz Transform in DSP then equalises to extend the response lower. Amplification comes from a rack-mount AMP2.6000, a two-channel DSP amplifier with TrueTemp thermal monitoring. The enclosure can be customised and weather-sealed on request. It ships in a crate of 900 x 1900 x 1900 mm weighing 480 kg. Deus covers it for three years, extended to five on registration. The Deus subwoofer range also includes the 18 inch Vera 18 MK2, the in-wall Tetra 10 and the Tesseract 18, a two-channel hi-fi model with the IsoCore motor.

The INVICTA 60 is meant for dedicated cinemas and studios, where it handles the lowest octave below the main speakers and other subwoofers, and its size requires planning of the room and its access.
