The Goliath XD is a powered dual subwoofer system from Legacy Audio, the American loudspeaker maker, which describes it as a reference-grade, mutually coupled and dynamically stabilised design. It is priced at USD 12,500 to 14,500 depending on finish. In the Legacy subwoofer range it sits alongside the smaller Metro XD and the Foundation and Outkast models, and Legacy positions it to match the dynamic range of high-efficiency loudspeakers for both music and film.

Key specs that matter

Two 15 inch woofers with spun aluminium diaphragms, cast frames, large motors and ultra-long-throw suspensions provide the active drive. They work with two custom mass-loaded 15 inch passive radiators, one firing downward and one to the rear. The built-in amplification delivers 1500 W. Frequency response is 12 Hz to 150 Hz ±2 dB, and maximum output is 130 dB at 1 m. The low-pass crossover is adjustable from 30 Hz to 200 Hz, with Linkwitz-Riley slopes of 6, 12, 24 or 48 dB per octave, and the alignment is eighth order with back-EMF cancelling. Inputs are two balanced XLR connections with 10 kOhm impedance. The cabinet measures 460 x 1019 x 486 mm and weighs 86.2 kg. Standard finishes are Black Oak, Black Satin, White Satin and Natural Oak, upgraded finishes include Rosewood, High Gloss Black, High Gloss White and Walnut, and custom colours are available.

Engineering and use context

Two active woofers working together in one cabinet double the moving area and allow each driver to move less for a given output, which lowers distortion at high levels. The two passive radiators replace a port, extending the low-frequency response with no port turbulence at high pressure. Mass-loading the radiators tunes their resonance to the lowest frequencies. Legacy pairs this with an eighth-order alignment and back-EMF cancelling, its approach to controlling the motion of the large drivers. The steep crossover slopes keep the subwoofer's output confined below the chosen frequency, so it does not overlap with the main speakers. Phase adjustment and blend equalisation are handled by an external processor rather than in the subwoofer. The XLR inputs keep the connection balanced over the long cable runs typical of home cinemas.

Pairing

The Goliath XD is intended for high-efficiency loudspeakers and home cinema systems where very high output and deep extension are needed. It connects through XLR to a preamplifier, processor or bass management system that also provides phase and equalisation control.

Alternatives

The Legacy Audio Metro XD is the smaller subwoofer in the same XD range.
