The Diamond sub is the active subwoofer of the Diamond series from Pylon Audio, a loudspeaker company from Poland established in 2011, and it is built to extend the bass of the Diamond stand-mount and floorstanding speakers. The cabinet is angled, and Pylon explains that the slope is not only a styling choice but directs the front of the acoustic wave toward the listening area. In the UK it costs GBP 1,695, and in Australia the price is AUD 3,499 to 3,849 depending on finish.

Key specs that matter

The woofer is the Pylon Audio PSW 26.4 AA, a custom version of the Seas L26RO4Y2 made for Pylon. Power comes from a Class D module rated at 350 W nominal and 500 W maximum. Pylon quotes a lower limit frequency of 25 Hz. The active analogue low-pass filter is adjustable from 40 Hz to 200 Hz, with phase switchable between 0 and 180 degrees and a volume control. Inputs cover high-level speaker connections, a low-level stereo pair on 2 RCA sockets and a dedicated LFE input. The enclosure is 330 mm wide, 458 mm high and 510 mm deep, and the unit weighs 33 kg.

Engineering and use context

The Seas-based driver has a large magnetic circuit and an openwork basket injection-moulded from metal, which keeps the frame rigid while leaving space for air to move behind the cone. Its stiff diaphragm has few natural resonances. According to Pylon, the Class D stage passes more than 90 percent of the power it draws on to the voice coil, which keeps waste heat in the box low. Tuning uses a vented box whose port is a slot rather than a round tube, and the tunnel profile was shaped to reduce air turbulence and acoustic losses at high excursion. Internal ribbing and placed reinforcements stiffen the panels against resonance. Finishes follow the rest of the Diamond range - natural oak veneer with an oil-wax coating in 11 colours, oak veneer under a 25 percent gloss lacquer, American walnut veneer, white or black in matt or gloss, and custom colours from the RAL palette. Because the finishes use real wood, the grain and colour vary from one unit to the next.

Pairing

The LFE socket connects to an AV receiver or processor in a home cinema, and the high-level input lets a stereo integrated amplifier with no subwoofer output feed it from its speaker terminals alongside Diamond series speakers.
