The Descent is the active subwoofer in the Peaks series from YG Acoustics, a line that also includes the Cairn and Tor stand-mounts and the Talus, Ascent and Summit towers. It uses a sealed enclosure with a forward-facing driver. The US list price is USD 7,800 per unit.
Key specs that matter
YG classifies the Descent as an active subwoofer with a DSP filter, so no external power amplifier is needed. Its bass is produced by a 28 cm YG aluminium cone unit of the BilletCore type, with a 75 mm voice coil wound on a titanium former and an advanced magnet structure. A 1,000 W class D amplifier powers it, rated at 0.0018 percent THD+N at 500 W and 124 dB SNR, the distortion figure therefore being quoted at half of the rated output. Frequency response is given as 18 Hz to 150 Hz. The cabinet is 44.5 cm high, 40 cm wide and 47.5 cm deep, and each Descent weighs 50 kg. Three wood finishes are listed - balanced oak, flamed rosewood and Datuk ebony.
Engineering and use context
Instead of the machined aluminium used in the larger YG ranges, the sealed cabinet walls are formed from 25 mm thick dense resin fibre curved to tight tolerances. Internal bracing and acoustic absorbers are fitted to suppress panel resonances. Signal processing is built in, and YG says its DSP filters come from advanced computational modelling. The user interface is kept to two controls, a volume knob and a preset selector, so crossover point and roll-off slope are set through the chosen preset rather than by separate knobs.
Pairing
The presets store frequency and phase curves for three kinds of main speaker - bookshelf, small floorstander and large floorstander. In the stand-mount setting the subwoofer begins to roll off at around 75 Hz, while a setting meant for audio-visual systems lets it run up to the top of its range. Balanced XLR inputs come with a through-connector for passing the signal on to further equipment, and a pair of RCA inputs covers unbalanced preamplifier outputs. Input impedance is 2.2 megohm on XLR and 54 kohm on RCA. For amplifiers without a line-level subwoofer output, left and right high-level inputs on a Phoenix MSTB 2.5/4-ST 5.08 terminal take speaker-level signals of up to 50 Vrms, with the matching cable not supplied.
Alternatives
The YG Acoustics Basis is a larger active subwoofer from the Reference series with a 32 cm driver in a machined aluminium enclosure.
