Lyngdorf Audio of Denmark makes the BW-2, a powered subwoofer built around a single 10-inch long-throw driver in a closed cabinet. Its shallow, wide shape lets it be placed upright or laid flat, and a bypass input allows it to work as a boundary woofer with a Lyngdorf amplifier handling the crossover.

Key specs that matter

Inside is a driver with a deep anodised aluminium cone, a 50 mm voice coil plus a vented magnet weighing 2.4 kg, with 15 mm of travel in each direction. An internal Class D amplifier supplies 400 W RMS. Through the standard line input the rated range runs from 25 Hz to 200 Hz, with the low-pass crossover adjustable between 60 Hz and 200 Hz. Sensitivity is quoted at 91 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, and maximum output reaches 106 dB RMS measured by the THX method between 40 Hz and 80 Hz. The enclosure measures 44 x 32.5 x 17.2 cm and the unit weighs 14.4 kg. Standby consumption stays below 0.5 W.

Engineering and use context

Made fully from MDF, the enclosure holds an internal volume of 14 litres, a small air space for a 10-inch driver, which explains why a long-throw design and a strong motor were chosen. The closed-box alignment avoids a port, so the unit may be placed near a wall or within a cabinet without port openings to keep clear. Lyngdorf states that the amplifier section draws on more than 15 years of in-house Class D development. When the bypass input is fed from a Lyngdorf amplifier, the internal filter is skipped and the upper limit extends to 800 Hz, so the unit can reproduce the full lower band that the main speakers would otherwise cover. That mode is the basis of the brand's boundary woofer concept, in which bass drivers are placed close to room boundaries rather than inside slim main speakers. Both inputs use RCA analogue mono sockets. Finishes are matte black with a black fabric cover or matte white with a grey cover, and five further fabric colours are offered as accessories.

Pairing

The line input suits any preamplifier or AV receiver with a mono subwoofer output, using the built-in crossover. Owners of Lyngdorf amplifiers can instead use the bypass path and let the amplifier set the split between satellites and woofer, which is where the wider upper limit becomes useful. The flat cabinet also makes a pair of units practical in a 20 m2 living room.

Alternatives

The Lyngdorf BW-3 is another active subwoofer in the same range of the brand's bass products.
