The BM3, or Bass Module 3, is an active bass unit from Børresen Acoustics, the Danish loudspeaker brand within Audio Group Denmark, designed by Michael Børresen and Flemming Erik Rasmussen. It was launched at the end of January 2026 at EUR 18,000, or USD 21,000 per unit, and is designed and made in Denmark. Unlike a conventional subwoofer, it is a folded-dipole design that radiates through openings at the front and rear, with no sealed or ported box.
Key specs that matter
Four Børresen DCC8 Neo 8 inch drivers are mounted in an opposed boxer layout. Their cones are spread-tow carbon over an aramid honeycomb core, with long-stroke natural rubber surrounds. Two 300 W Aavik UMAC Class D amplifiers with Pascal technology drive them. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 120 Hz. The analogue low-pass filter covers 33 to 91 Hz and a default of 63 Hz, and it can be switched off when an external crossover is used. Phase is variable from 20 to 160 degrees with an invert switch, gain from 10 to 28 dB, and a volume control works in 56 steps of 0.5 dB. Inputs and outputs are two sets of RCA line connections for daisy-chaining, with 10 kOhm input impedance and a maximum input of 9 V RMS in mono or 4.5 V in stereo. The BM3 draws less than 1 W in standby and less than 30 W at idle. The cabinet is 399 mm wide, 585 mm high and 429 mm deep, and it weighs 46.4 kg, finished in high-gloss black with carbon details.
Engineering and use context
Børresen describes the folded dipole as a velocity converter rather than a pressure generator. The front and rear output are in opposite phase and cancel towards the sides, so less bass energy reaches the side walls. In the boxer layout the drivers face each other in pairs, and their reaction forces cancel so the cabinet does not vibrate. The analogue low-pass works without signal delay. Noise reduction relies on 36 Active Tesla Coils, 72 Active Square Tesla Coils, three dither circuits and three Anti Areal Resonance Coils, technologies shared across Audio Group Denmark products. Two DC trigger connections, an RS-232 port for updates and an unswitched mains outlet for daisy-chaining are fitted, and the unit works in mono or stereo mode.
Pairing
The BM3 is designed to extend high-end speakers, Børresen's own models included, in the lowest octaves. Two units give a stereo bass system, and the daisy-chain outputs pass the signal on to the main amplifier or a second module.
Alternatives
The Børresen BM2 is a smaller and lighter folded dipole bass module that debuted at High End Vienna 2026.
