The ASW608 is the smallest powered subwoofer in the ASW range from Bowers & Wilkins, a line covered by a combined owner's manual dated May 2013 that also includes the ASW610 and ASW610XP. Priced at USD 700, it is intended for compact stereo and home cinema systems, and the 600 Series S3 line-up announced in August 2023 names it and the ASW610 as the subwoofers of that range.
Key specs that matter
Its 200 mm (8-inch) long-throw driver, with a paper and Aramid fibre cone, works in a sealed cabinet on 200 W of Class D power. Response reaches 32 Hz at ±3 dB and 23 Hz at -6 dB, with the upper limit adjustable between 40 and 140 Hz. Input impedance is 33 kohms and noise sits more than 90 dB below the signal. Power consumption is 40 W in use and 0.5 W in standby. The cabinet is 260 mm high, 260 mm wide and 305 mm deep. Height rises to 272 mm on feet and 288 mm on spikes, and depth is 330 mm with the grille. The weight is 8.85 kg. Buyers choose a black or white cabinet and a black or grey grille. This is the lightest ASW model, against 12.5 kg for the ASW610 and 18.65 kg for the ASW610XP.
Engineering and use context
Connections are a stereo RCA line input, speaker-level binding posts and a 3.5 mm 12 V trigger. Line and speaker inputs have separate volume controls. A bypass for the low-pass filter applies to the line input only, so an AV receiver can handle bass management itself. A three-position bass extension switch, A, B or C, trades depth for output, with A giving the most extension. A two-position EQ switch sets the roll-off alignment, and a phase switch offers 0 or 180 degrees. The power mode switch selects On, Auto or Standby. In Auto the subwoofer sleeps after about 5 minutes without signal, and in Standby it wakes on the trigger. There is no port in the closed box, and Class D amplification suits such a compact cabinet. Spikes and rubber feet are both included, and the grille is removable.
Pairing
The ASW608 suits small stand-mounts such as the 606 S3 or 607 S3 from the 600 Series, and the speaker-level input connects to stereo amplifiers without a sub output. AV receivers use the RCA line input with the low-pass bypass engaged, and the trigger input lets a receiver wake the sub from Standby when the AV system powers up.
Alternatives
The Bowers & Wilkins ASW610 moves up to a 250 mm driver with the same amplifier power and reaches 27 Hz at ±3 dB.
