The Alpha RS 8 is the compact active subwoofer in the MAGNAT Alpha RS pair, combining a 20 cm woofer with switching amplification in a front-firing bass reflex box that MAGNAT describes as extremely compact. It sits below the larger Alpha RS 12 in the series, and the brand also lists the Omega CS 12, the Base 8 and the Cinema Ultra SUB 300-THX among its subwoofers.

Key specs that matter

The 8 inch high-power long-throw driver receives 80 W continuous from its Class D module and 160 W maximum, so the 160 W number is a peak figure rather than the RMS rating. MAGNAT specifies a frequency response of 25 Hz to 200 Hz, with an adjustable crossover from 50 Hz to 150 Hz and a phase switch offering 0 or 180 degrees. Connections comprise stereo RCA line inputs and stereo speaker-level terminals. The housing is 26 cm wide, 35 cm tall and 37 cm deep including the terminals, and the unit weighs 8.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The magnet and motor system of the woofer was developed with Klippel measurement tools to control the drive at long cone travel. An active equalisation stage, named the LPC circuit by MAGNAT, adjusts the response of the amplifier to extend output from such a small enclosure. Two Airflex ports with shaped profiles vent the MDF cabinet and are intended to reduce air turbulence and port noise. The feet are oversized and fitted with rubber inserts, which decouple the box from wooden or tiled floors. A grille can be removed from the front baffle. Auto standby is switchable and consumes under 0.5 W, and the power supply works from 110 V to 240 V mains at 50 or 60 Hz. The standard finish is black ash, with a mocha option also listed in some markets.

Pairing

An AV receiver connects through the LFE output to the RCA input, and its bass management then decides which frequencies are routed to the sub. If the amplifier lacks a dedicated sub pre-out, the high-level terminals pick up its speaker outputs instead, which also suits older equipment. MAGNAT names AV receivers, stereo amplifiers and vintage setups as the intended partners. In a stereo system the low-pass setting follows the lower limit of the front speakers, and the phase switch helps the output of the sub and the main pair add up rather than cancel at the handover.

Alternatives

The MAGNAT Alpha RS 12 steps up to a 30 cm woofer driven by 120 W continuous in a 36 x 46.5 x 46 cm enclosure.
