The XRT1.1K is the smaller of the two line-array towers in the current McIntosh range, conceived as a more manageable version of the XRT2.1K and using driver designs first created for that bigger model. McIntosh states that it is 36 cm shorter and 78 kg lighter than its sibling. The American list price was USD 60,000 per pair. It is a ported four-way floorstanding system finished in piano black, and together with the XRT2.1K and the XR100 it makes up the three floorstanders in the current McIntosh catalogue.

Key specs that matter

Each speaker holds 70 drivers - four 6.5 inch woofers and two 6.5 inch low-frequency midranges with Nanocarbon Fiber and Nomex honeycomb long-throw cones, 24 upper midranges of 2 inch diameter and 40 tweeters of 3/4 inch, both of the latter types using aluminium-magnesium domes. The network divides the band at 150 Hz, 400 Hz and 2 kHz. McIntosh quotes a range of 16 Hz to 45 kHz, 89 dB at 2.8 V and 1 m, 8 ohms nominal and a power rating of 1,200 W. Including feet the cabinet stands 179.6 cm tall and measures 53.9 cm in both width and depth. It weighs 82 kg, rising to 145 kg when packed.

Engineering and use context

The line array spreads output evenly over a wide area, so a listener seated near the speaker is not overwhelmed while a distant one still hears the upper range clearly, and McIntosh claims consistent stereo across nearly all seats. The array column is held above the bass cabinet by steel spiders modelled on skyscraper construction and capped with magnetic covers shaped like McIntosh control knobs. The bass cabinet carries seven coats of high-gloss piano black paint with brushed and black aluminium trim, and it rests on a machined aluminium and glass base with four adjustable feet. The crossover uses low-loss, high-current capacitors and inductors, the latter picked for linearity at high power, and self-resetting high-current PTC fuses protect the drivers. A knit cloth grille attaches with magnets, the logo on the base lights up via Power Control, and the warranty lasts five years.

Pairing

Separate pairs of gold-plated Solid Cinch terminals for the mid/high, low and subwoofer sections allow tri-wiring or tri-amping, so the system can be driven by three stereo amplifiers or by a group of McIntosh monoblocks assigned to each band.

Alternatives

The McIntosh XRT2.1K is the larger line-array tower, with 81 drivers per side, a 2,000 W rating and a height of 2.1 m.
