The VC 1 is the smallest of three floorstanding models in the Vienna Classic Series from Brodmann Acoustics of Vienna, sitting below the VC 2 and VC 7. The company also builds the Joseph Brodmann Series with the JB 205 and JB 175, and the Festival Series with the F1, F2 and the FW wall model. The VC 1 combines a slender tower cabinet with the piano-derived construction ideas that run through the whole Brodmann range.
Key specs that matter
Brodmann rates the frequency range at 35 Hz to 25,000 Hz within 3 dB, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Sensitivity is 91 dB at 1 m, reached with 2.1 W of input. The nominal load rating is 60 W, and the music load figure is 120 W. The cabinet stands 927 mm tall, 160 mm wide and 245 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 13 kg. Inside are one tweeter, two woofer and midrange units and two acoustically active panels.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter sits on the front baffle, while the pair of woofer and midrange units is placed on the side walls of the cabinet. Brodmann uses what it calls an acoustic active crossover. The lower transition happens acoustically at 130 Hz with a slope of 4.5 dB per octave, and the upper division is electrical at 1.45 kHz with a first-order 6 dB per octave slope. Bass output relies on the Horn Resonator, a design derived from the Helmholtz principle. Instead of a conventional reflex port, a small vent feeds air into the narrow gap between the cabinet and a piano soundboard mounted about 4 cm away, which accelerates the airflow leaving the enclosure. This approach lets the company do without internal damping material in the box. Finishes combine polished piano lacquer with visible wood grain. Because of the side-firing drivers and rear soundboard arrangement, the maker's guidance is to stand the VC 1 against a wall at roughly 30 cm from the rear surface, which suits living spaces where a tower cannot be pulled far into the room, such as a room of about 20 m2.
Pairing
The easy nominal load combined with the high sensitivity rating means the VC 1 does not require a large power reserve, and modest integrated amplifiers of both transistor and valve types sit comfortably inside its load rating. Brodmann also offers the VC Center, a horizontal centre channel from the same series, so a stereo pair of VC 1 towers can grow into a home cinema layout with a matching front channel.
Alternatives
The Brodmann VC 2 is the tower one step above the VC 1.
