The Turnberry GR-OW belongs to Tannoy's Prestige GR range and is sold as a 2-way floorstanding hi-fi loudspeaker with a 10 inch Dual Concentric driver, finished in oiled walnut. Tannoy presents it as a successor to the HPD Series monitors it created in the 1970s, rebuilt with new, upscaled drive units and components that did not exist when those models were made.
Key specs that matter
Tannoy states a bandwidth of 34 Hz to 44 kHz at -6 dB, averaged over the stated band and measured on axis at 1 m. Sensitivity reaches 93 dB for 1 W at 1 m with unweighted pink noise in half space, and nominal impedance is 8 ohm. IEC power handling is 100 W continuous with 400 W peaks, maximum level is 113 dB continuous or 119 dB peak, and nominal dispersion covers 90 degrees in a conical pattern. The driver places a 33 mm aluminium and magnesium alloy dome at the centre of a 254 mm paper pulp cone, and both sections use edge wound voice coils, the one behind the cone measuring 52 mm. Each cabinet is 950 mm tall, 456 mm wide and 336 mm deep and weighs 36.5 kg net.
Engineering and use context
A passive, hard-wired network with bi-wire provision splits the band at 1.3 kHz, using low loss second order slopes for both the bass and the treble path. Behind the detachable front grille sits an Energy switch block with five positions that raises or lowers the compression unit's output by up to 3 dB as a shelf across 1.3 kHz to 44 kHz. Bass loading comes from a dual distributed port. The enclosure is built from 19 mm MDF with plywood internal bracing and heavy damping, and the walnut veneer is covered by a nylon grille.
Pairing
Tannoy's recommended amplifier range is 20 to 200 W RMS. Five 4 mm binding posts plated with 24 carat gold take single wiring through the supplied links, a bi-wire cable, or a bi-amp arrangement in which the fifth post can go to the amplifier's ground terminal. For bi-amping a pair the manual calls for four mono or two stereo power amplifiers of one type, and with two stereo units it suggests that one feeds the bass sections of both speakers and the other the treble sections. The accessory kit adds four bi-wire links, eight carpet spikes, eight adjustable feet, carpet protectors, a tin of wood wax and a welcome pack of documents, and threaded inserts in the base of each cabinet receive the spikes.
