The Triton Two+ is a floorstanding loudspeaker from GoldenEar with a powered subwoofer section built into each cabinet, so the passive upper range and an active bass system share one tower. GoldenEar describes it as incorporating technologies taken from the Triton One, and production of this tower has ended according to GoldenEar.
Key specs that matter
The High-Velocity Folded Ribbon AMT tweeter is placed between two 4.5 inch cast-basket upper-bass and midrange drivers with multi-vaned phase plugs, a D'Appolito arrangement. Below them, two 5 x 9 inch long-throw quadratic subwoofer drivers face forward and are coupled to two side-mounted 7 x 10 inch quadratic planar units that the back wave of those drivers moves, with a combined radiator area of 344.3 cm2. GoldenEar lists 90 dB at 1 W and 1 m into 4 ohm (2.83 V), a typical range of 30 Hz to 25 kHz, 4 ohm nominal impedance and a recommended amplifier range of 20 to 500 W per channel. The tower measures 13.5 cm wide at the front, 18.5 cm at the rear, 38.1 cm deep and 121.9 cm tall, sits on a base of 29.2 x 45.7 cm and weighs 27.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
The two radiators on opposite side walls are inertially balanced, and the crossover is a fully balanced design with film capacitors, while the bass amplifier runs on reprogrammed DSP. Each tower has one set of 5-way binding posts plus a separate LFE input, and a special circuit converts the speaker-level signal into a low-level feed for the subwoofer amplifier, so a plain stereo hookup also drives the bass section. Sensing of an incoming signal switches the bass amplifier on automatically, with a low-draw standby state between sessions, and an internal overload circuit turns the subwoofers down or off when they are overdriven or overheated. A rear level knob sets bass output, while crossover point and phase are fixed at the factory with no user controls. The mains version is 120 V or 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz. Supplied parts include the base, leveling feet and optional spikes with locking nuts. GoldenEar gives five years of warranty on drivers and cabinets and three years on the electronics.
Pairing
Each tower needs a mains socket for the bass amplifier, and the passive section asks for an amplifier inside the rated power window. In a surround system a receiver can send the LFE channel to both towers through a Y cable, and a GoldenEar ForceField subwoofer can be added through a separate LFE output.
