The Townus 90 is the three-way floorstanding loudspeaker of the Canton Townus series, which the German maker introduced in September 2021 to replace the discontinued Chrono line. Its name refers to the Taunus hills in Hesse, where the company is based, and production takes place in Germany. The German list price at launch was EUR 2,598 for a pair finished in black or white and EUR 2,798 for a walnut pair.

Key specs that matter

Two 174 mm woofers work alongside a 174 mm midrange driver, all with titanium cones, and a 25 mm ceramic dome tweeter handles the treble. The crossover divides the signal at 170 Hz and 3,200 Hz. Canton quotes a frequency range of 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz and an impedance of 4 to 8 ohm. Power handling is rated at 150 W nominal and 300 W music. The cabinet is 25 cm wide, 105 cm high and 36 cm deep, and one speaker weighs 24.2 kg. Finishes are white satin matte, black high gloss and natural walnut veneer.

Engineering and use context

The woofers use double-cone membranes and wave surrounds, and every driver is framed by a joint-free diamond-cut aluminium ring. The tweeter sits in a waveguide. The bass reflex port fires downward, so no opening is visible on the front or back, and the enclosure is built from MDF with internal bracing and damping material. The crossover follows Canton's DC principle. A wooden base with metal feet raises the cabinet, and the fabric grille attaches by magnets. The gold-plated terminals take banana plugs and are split into two pairs, which permits bi-wiring or bi-amping. The maker also offers it inside Townus 90 5.1 Set packages, listed as item 87325 in white satin matte and item 87326 in black high gloss.

Pairing

Within the series, Canton pairs the Townus 90 with the Townus 50 as the center speaker and the compact Townus 30 as surrounds, and the range also includes wall, Dolby Atmos and subwoofer models for 5.1 and 5.1.2 layouts. The split terminals allow two stereo amplifiers to drive the bass drivers and the upper section independently. As the maker specifies the impedance as low as 4 ohm, any amplifier used should be stable into 4 ohm.

Alternatives

The Canton Townus 100 is the other passive floorstander of the Townus series, a three-way design.
