Goldmund, the Geneva maker founded in 1978, offers the Theia Passive as a four-way floorstander that is the passive version of the Theia design from the brand's active speaker range. It was launched alongside the three-way Rhea Passive, and the pair price is close to USD 215,000. Each unit travels in its own flight case measuring 79 x 176 x 63 cm, with a gross weight of 264 kg.
Key specs that matter
The range is split between a soft dome tweeter, a 4 inch upper midrange, a 6 inch lower midrange and a 12 inch woofer in a vented enclosure. The quoted response runs from 20 Hz at -6 dB to 25 kHz. Nominal impedance is 6.0 ohm, and the curve falls to a minimum of 3.6 ohm. Each speaker is 55 cm wide, 158 cm tall and 67.5 cm deep, and it weighs 197 kg. The finish is a silver gray enclosure with black grilles. The woofer is the same 12 inch size used in the Rhea Passive, while the Theia adds a second midrange driver above it.
Engineering and use context
Aluminium panels are joined invisibly at 45 degree angles, so the grille and cabinet read as one block, and the sides follow a wavy line. The metal is micro-blasted on vertical faces and brushed on horizontal ones. Goldmund Mechanical Grounding routes vibration through a central tip into a rigid floor, with adjustable feet setting the height. Every driver has a separate custom crossover board carrying MKP capacitors, non-inductive film resistors cooled by dedicated heat sinks and air-core inductors wound from thick pure copper. Goldmund modelled the system in its own Proteus LS software, which computes impedance, volume velocity, membrane displacement and sound pressure. The rear panel has three sets of terminals. In bi-amp use either the woofer is driven alone while one amplifier handles tweeter and both midranges, or the tweeter and upper midrange go to one amplifier while the lower midrange and woofer share the other. Tri-amping splits the load into tweeter plus upper midrange, lower midrange, and woofer. The box includes the needed bridges, and four people are advised for unpacking.
Pairing
Because the impedance dips below 4 ohm, any partner amplifier has to stay stable into a demanding load, and Goldmund specifies fast, high slew rate designs with wide dynamic range. Mono blocks or two to three stereo amplifiers can be used through the split terminals.
Alternatives
The Goldmund Rhea Passive is the smaller three-way floorstander of the series, with one 7 inch midrange in a 123 kg cabinet.
