The System M5 SE is a passive tower with three ways, made by the German maker Ascendo, the special-edition version of the System M5 in the modular System range. Its bass section follows what Ascendo calls SASB technology, pairing a current-dynamically damped outer woofer with a semi-symmetrical bandpass enclosure. The line traces back to the System M-S of the mid-2000s, a 120 kg model on a separate stand, also sold without the stand as the System M-F2.

Key specs that matter

Rated response runs from 26 Hz to 42 kHz at -3 dB, and Ascendo states that the 26 Hz point holds even at very high volume. Sensitivity is 91 dB at 1 W and 1 m into a nominal 8 ohm, and the minimum programme rating reaches 600 W. A magnetostatic planar tweeter covers the top octaves. The bass module combines an outer 21.5 cm driver, fitted with a phase plug and an HPC diaphragm, and an inner 28 cm driver with a hexacone honeycomb diaphragm. The speaker module measures 40 x 121.3 x 45 cm and rests on a base of 40 x 11 x 45 cm, giving a total height of 132.3 cm. The complete speaker weighs 73.5 kg, 2.5 kg more than the related System M5S with otherwise identical published data.

Engineering and use context

Tweeter and bass units sit in resonance-decoupled mounts, so vibration from the woofers is kept away from the upper module. The tweeter position can be shifted to align arrival times for listening heights between 50 and 190 cm above the floor. Ascendo explains that a light high-frequency driver reacts faster than heavy bass cones, so moving it back lets both parts of the signal reach the ear together. The enclosure pairs low-magnetic V2A stainless steel with a sandwich of heavily damped bitumen and pressed fibreboard, a mix meant to reduce body-borne noise. Switches adjust the tweeter level and the lower midrange contribution of the inner driver. In the earlier M-S, Ascendo used a linear-phase crossover with 18 dB slopes and a constant-voltage kernel.

Pairing

With its high sensitivity and nominal impedance, the M5 SE presents a load that most transistor amplifiers drive without strain, while the power rating leaves headroom for larger designs. Rhodium terminals accept single, bi- or tri-wiring, so owners with three stereo power amplifiers can feed each driver section from its own channel. Cabinets leave the factory in black piano lacquer unless another piano colour is ordered.

Alternatives

The Ascendo System Z5 is the smaller passive floorstander of the same series, rated at 89.5 dB and 5 ohm with a 21 cm Kevlar inner driver.
