Acora Acoustics began selling speakers in the fall of 2018, and the SRC-1 is the two-way granite floorstander of its SR Series. The company is based in Scarborough, Ontario and divides production among three Toronto-area sites - one cuts and finishes the stone, one assembles drivers and crossovers, and one handles packing and shipping. The SRC-1 was first listed at USD 28,000 per pair and later at USD 29,500 or CAD 40,000.

Key specs that matter

A 1 inch soft dome ring radiator and a 7 inch sandwich paper cone, both from the Scan-Speak Illuminator range, make up a two-way bass reflex system. Impedance is 8 ohm, efficiency 90.5 dB at 1 W and 1 m, frequency range 29 Hz to 30 kHz, and suggested amplification runs from 10 W to 250 W. The cabinet is 45.7 cm wide and 35.6 cm deep, reaching about 113 cm in height once the base and spikes are fitted, and each unit weighs about 111.6 kg. Nero Assoluto and Mystic Grey are the standard stones, Steel Grey, Black Galaxy, Blue Pearl and Emerald Green Pearl come to special order, and Sunset Fire, Mari Blue and Lilac Purple form a limited group of rare upgrades.

Engineering and use context

The black stone is sold as African black granite, though geologically it is a fine-grained gabbro. Eight pieces, each 3 cm thick, form a polyhedral enclosure whose walls are stiff enough that Acora uses no bracing and only minimal damping. A single 51 mm port exits at the rear above the binding posts. The crossover sits in its own compartment on a stiff carbon fibre board, and its slopes come closest to a fourth-order design. Every driver is dismantled and modified before installation, and internal runs use Cardas copper wire. Because each slab has its own grain and mass, the listed weight varies a little from pair to pair. Underneath is a 6 mm damped structural steel base with a footprint of 49.5 by 38 cm, fitted with aluminium spikes as standard or hardened stainless steel spikes with solid brass bodies as an option.

Pairing

With a benign nominal load and moderate efficiency, the SRC-1 accepts a wide choice of amplification, from low-powered valve units near the bottom of its rating to large transistor designs. Acora pitches it at rooms of about 11 m2 to 46 m2. Its two-way layout with a single woofer keeps the load simpler than that of the twin-woofer SRC-2, which drops to 4 ohm.
