The SN/SL 1000.1 AMT is a four-way passive floorstanding loudspeaker from Fischer & Fischer of Schmallenberg, Germany, a company that has built loudspeakers with natural slate cabinets for 45 years. It sits in the four-way group of the current range together with the SN/SL 770.1 AMT. The SN version keeps the natural surface of the stone, while the SL version receives polish and lacquer in a RAL or automotive colour of the buyer's choice. The company describes its slate cabinets as sized for living spaces and fitted with components from leading suppliers.

Key specs that matter

In total the tower carries seven drivers. Two 260 mm Fischer & Fischer cone units with carbon, paper and foam sandwich membranes act as subwoofers, and two 220 mm cones of the same membrane type handle the bass. The midrange uses two 180 mm cones with a carbon paper and carbon foil sandwich membrane, a neodymium magnet and an aluminium phase plug. For the highest octaves there is an Air Motion Transformer produced to a special custom order by Mundorf. The maker quotes a response of 22 to 25,000 Hz within 3 dB, an impedance of 4 ohm, a sensitivity of 92 dB at 1 W and 1 m and a peak level capability of 118 dB SPL. The slate cabinet measures 1560 mm high, 275 to 320 mm wide and 715 mm deep, and with the floor system fitted the overall size grows to 1620 x 420 x 830 mm. Each speaker weighs 283 kg.

Engineering and use context

Natural slate with low resonance, 20 to 23 mm thick, forms the housing, which works on the bass reflex principle. According to the company, slate has a flaky, layered structure and very little resonance of its own, and its high mass lets the energy of the drivers pass into the air rather than into the cabinet walls. First and second order networks handle the frequency division, with phase and impedance correction. Tri-wiring terminals are fitted, with 63 A rhodium-plated connectors and bridges of pure silver. Fischer & Fischer also states that its loudspeakers may receive technical updates years after they were bought.

Pairing

The tri-wire terminals allow the subwoofer, bass and upper sections to be driven from separate amplifier channels, and the high sensitivity figure means a moderate power level is enough, although an amplifier stable into the low nominal impedance remains the requirement.

Alternatives

The Fischer & Fischer SN/SL 770.1 AMT is the other four-way floorstander of the brand, with two subwoofers, one bass unit, two midranges and an AMT tweeter.
