The Smart Vento 9 S2 is the active wireless floorstander of the Vento range from Canton in Germany, a three-way tower with 600 W of amplification per cabinet. With the S2 revision Canton changed the basic shape of the speaker and its cabinet radii to gain internal volume for more low-frequency bandwidth, and fitted a new base on which the tower appears to float. Canton prices the pair at EUR 4,900 in Germany and AUD 9,999 in Australia. Finishes are black, white, light walnut and dark walnut, all in high gloss.
Key specs that matter
Two 192 mm woofers and a 174 mm midrange use titanium graphite cones on wave surrounds, the midrange surround being triple-folded, while the 25 mm tweeter has an aluminium oxide ceramic dome. Crossover points are 180 Hz and 3,100 Hz, so the pair of woofers covers only the deepest octaves. The frequency range is 22 to 30,000 Hz. According to Canton each cabinet measures 28.7 cm wide, 110 cm high and 38 cm deep and weighs 29 kg.
Engineering and use context
Canton says a chemical treatment makes the titanium graphite diaphragms stiffer, lighter and better damped than its earlier titanium cones, with the aim of keeping partial vibrations out of the working band and the crossover region. The bass reflex resonator vents downward toward the base in a downfire layout, and Canton states that the new base makes placement less critical. Surfaces receive several layers of lacquer over rounded edges and curved side panels. Wired connections comprise balanced XLR, RCA, optical and coaxial S/PDIF at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz, and a USB-B socket with XMOS, with a coaxial digital output and an RCA subwoofer output alongside. Bluetooth 3.0 carries aptX. The wireless link between the towers uses 24-bit processing and can also carry up to eight channels at 16 bit and 48 kHz. Formats decoded are Dolby Audio, DTS Digital Surround and PCM up to 24 bit and 96 kHz. Virtual surround, an equaliser, dynamic range control, a sleep timer, IR learning and automatic switching on and off are built in, and a mini display shows status. Standby draw is 0.5 W in ECO mode. The box holds a remote control, power cable, optical, coaxial and analogue cables and feet with spikes, while a magnetic fabric cover is optional. Active models carry two years of warranty, extendable to five.
Pairing
A streamer, TV, CD player or computer connects directly. For multichannel use the system grows to 5.1 with other Canton Smart speakers and subwoofers.
Alternatives
The Canton Smart GLE 9 S2 is a slimmer active three-way tower with titanium drivers and a rear-firing reflex port.
