The SCM200ASLT is a large three-way tower from ATC, the loudspeaker specialist based at Aston Down near Stroud in England. In the Tower Series it sits between the SCM150ASLT and the SCM300ASLT, and a passive SCM200PSLT is also offered. Unlike smaller ATC active towers with amplifier packs on the cabinet, the active SCM200 gets its power from a separate rack-mount ATC P4 amplifier with four channels and 850 W in total.

Key specs that matter

Two 12 inch (314 mm) SL bass drivers handle the low end, a 3 inch (75 mm) Super Dome unit covers the midrange and a dual-suspension S-Spec soft dome of 1 inch (25 mm) takes the top. The crossover points are 380 Hz and 3.5 kHz. Measured free-standing, the minus 6 dB cut-offs are 32 Hz and 20 kHz, and amplitude linearity within 2 dB covers 60 Hz to 12 kHz. Maximum continuous SPL at 1 metre is 118 dB for the active version and 117 dB for the passive one. The P4 delivers 275 W to each bass driver, 200 W to the midrange and 100 W to the tweeter. The cabinet is 1586 mm tall, 398 mm wide and 535 mm deep.

Engineering and use context

The active system uses fourth-order critically damped active filters, and overload handling relies on momentary FET gain reduction, backed by thermal protection for the tweeter. The P4 is a grounded source design, and giving each bass driver its own channel accounts for the four-way amplifier layout in a three-way speaker. Input is by female XLR with 2 V input sensitivity and a balanced input impedance above 10 kohm. Coherent dispersion is plus or minus 80 degrees horizontally and plus or minus 10 degrees vertically. The passive SCM200PSLT shares the drivers and cabinet but uses second-order critically damped passive filters, tri-wire binding posts, 91 dB sensitivity and an 8 ohm nominal impedance. The cabinet can be ordered in cherry, walnut, oak or black ash veneer or in satin black and white paint, with extra-cost veneers such as rosewood, pippy oak and burr magnolia and piano gloss options. ATC grants a 6-year warranty.

Pairing

Signal comes from a preamplifier with balanced outputs into the P4 rack amplifier, and ATC lists the CA2 and SCA2 preamplifiers, the CDA2 CD player with preamp and DAC and the P4 Pro as partner electronics. Space is needed for the rack unit as well as the two towers.

Alternatives

The SCM150ASLT is a smaller active tower in the same series, with one 375 mm bass driver and its 350 W amplifier fitted to the cabinet.
