The SCM100ASLT is the active three-way floorstander in the Tower Series of ATC, whose drive units and electronics are designed and made at its own works in Gloucestershire. It uses a 12-inch bass unit and carries its amplification inside the cabinet, and ATC sells an otherwise matching passive model, the SCM100PSLT, for use with external amplifiers. In the United States the pair has been priced from USD 30,000 to USD 39,000 depending on finish.

Key specs that matter

ATC pairs a 25 mm neodymium soft dome tweeter, the SM75-150 S soft dome midrange of 75 mm and the latest 314 mm SL bass driver. A Class AB tri-amplifier pack supplies 350 W per speaker - 200 W for the woofer, 100 W for the midrange and 50 W for the tweeter. Response is held to plus or minus 2 dB from 65 Hz to 17 kHz and reaches 32 Hz to 22 kHz at plus or minus 6 dB. Maximum SPL is 115 dB, and left and right units are matched within 0.5 dB. The listed dispersion is 80 degrees each way horizontally and 10 degrees each way vertically, coherent in both planes. ATC gives the cabinet as 1167 x 428 x 581 mm (HxWxD) and the weight as 63 kg.

Engineering and use context

The active crossover works at 380 Hz and 3.5 kHz with fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley filters, and the amplifier pack also contains overload protection for the drivers. The electronics are fully analogue, with no DSP, digital inputs or converters. Both the tweeter and the midrange dome have dual suspensions, and the midrange sits on a waveguide. The bass driver has a 3-inch voice coil, a cast basket and a treated pulp cone, driven by a large ATC motor assembly. The enclosure is 19 mm MDF with a 32 mm front baffle, heavily braced and lined with bitumastic damping pads, and it is reflex loaded through a port below the woofer. At the back each speaker has a power switch, a bass boost control giving up to +6 dB and a pot for input sensitivity. The box includes two fabric-wrapped grilles, two IEC power leads and a set of eight M8 x 1.25 mm floor spikes including nuts. Four standard wood veneers and two satin paints are offered, and ATC also lists five special veneers and three high gloss finishes at extra cost. The warranty lasts 6 years.

Pairing

Every speaker takes its signal through a single female XLR socket, so the natural source is a balanced preamplifier, or a streamer with variable balanced outputs. No power amplifier is required, but each speaker needs a mains outlet as well as the signal cable.
