The Posh, a Canadian tower from Gershman Acoustics, is made of two physically separate modules. A top unit holding the midrange and tweeter is carried on a sculpted steel frame, and a woofer section slides in underneath it, so the two parts share no common enclosure wall. Gershman finishes the speaker in an Italian high gloss black piano lacquer, and other colours can be ordered to custom specification.

Key specs that matter

The top module combines an Accuton ceramic midrange with a soft dome tweeter. Below it are two woofers, and each of them works in its own tuned enclosure rather than sharing a single bass volume. Gershman quotes sensitivity of 87 dB and nominal impedance of 6 ohm. Each speaker stands about 150 cm tall, 30.5 cm wide and 44.5 cm deep.

Engineering and use context

Enclosure walls are made of 2.5 cm HDF, a high density fibreboard, in place of the MDF used by most speaker makers. The panels are reinforced with stainless steel plates 6 mm thick, and the cabinets are tapered so that opposing walls are not parallel, which the company says reduces standing waves inside the box. Separating the upper module from the bass section keeps vibration generated by the woofers away from the midrange and tweeter. In the crossover for the top module Gershman uses a Mundorf MCap Supreme Classic Silver-Gold Oil capacitor, an oil-filled type, together with a Mundorf MResist Supreme resistor. The crossover parts are set in a casting compound to hold them stable against vibration. Speaker cables connect through Furutech terminals, which are larger than typical binding posts and can be tightened firmly by finger pressure alone.

Pairing

With its moderate sensitivity and nominal load the Posh does not present an unusual electrical challenge, but three drive units per side and two woofer enclosures favour an amplifier with solid current delivery. A capable solid-state integrated or a pair of power amplifiers is preferable to a low-output tube amplifier, and the tall cabinet suits rooms from 20 m2 upward with space around each tower.
