That earlier model was a passive version of the BBC LS5/8 Grade One studio monitor, and the S3 keeps the same core drive unit concept. In the UK a pair costs GBP 17,999 including VAT with dedicated matching stands supplied, and European pricing sits at about EUR 18,000 per pair.

The bass unit is a 305 mm VOLT driver built in the UK to Rogers specification, and a 34 mm silk dome handles the treble. The reflex enclosure holds 114 litres, stands 760 mm high, 460 mm wide and 400 mm deep, and weighs 32 kg per speaker.

Engineering and use context

Its woofer has a lightweight PVC cone held by a twin rear suspension to limit distortion on sharp transients, an extended pole piece with a flux control ring to cut modulation distortion, and a low-mass copper-clad aluminium voice coil. The tweeter carries a phase correction plate and a single-layer coil wound with the same kind of low-mass wire. An 18-element crossover applies third-order filtering at 18 dB per octave to both drivers and hands over at 2.6 kHz, built with high-power ferrite inductors and screened toroid chokes. The cabinet follows classic BBC thin-wall practice - 12 mm Baltic birch plywood that is carefully damped rather than made heavy and rigid - and a front-facing port is tuned to 35 Hz. Amazaque and Olive Ash real wood veneers are standard, with piano lacquer and other veneers as options, and a Tygan cloth grille covers the baffle. The supplied stands lift the tweeter to seated ear height.

Pairing

The test voltage delivers exactly 1 W into the nominal load, so the sensitivity figure is a true one-watt rating, and the high impedance draws little current from the amplifier. Solid-state designs will deliver less power into this load than their 8 ohm rating suggests, so headroom should be judged against that load. Bi-wire copper terminals let the low-pass and high-pass filter halves be fed by their own cable pairs, and Rogers also builds the E20A/II valve integrated amplifier within its own range.
