The Phoenix Evara is the floorstanding member of the Evara range from Krix, the loudspeaker company that designs, engineers and handcrafts its products in South Australia. Evara is a restyled family of existing Krix hi-fi designs in which the acoustic engineering stays as it was and only the exterior changes. The Phoenix Evara shares its specifications with the Phoenix Mk2, so it is that tower in the new Evara finishes. Krix prices it at AUD 2,695 per pair and covers it with a 5-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
The Phoenix Evara uses a two-way D'Appolito driver arrangement. Two nominal 165 mm woofers with laminated polypropylene cones sit above and below the tweeter, each driven by a 33 mm voice coil and fitted with an aluminium flux stabilisation ring. The high-frequency unit is a 26 mm dual concentric diaphragm with a wave-guide centre plug for controlled directivity and a copper shorting ring in its motor. Krix states an in-room response of 35 Hz to 40 kHz and a sensitivity of 91 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Height is 950 mm including the feet, width 195 mm and depth 295 mm, and each cabinet weighs 18 kg.
Engineering and use context
In the D'Appolito layout one woofer sits on each side of the tweeter, all three stacked in a slim column less than 20 cm wide. The cabinet is bass reflex loaded with a rear vent and stiffened by internal X bracing. Krix aims the Evara idea at apartments, rentals and townhouses rather than dedicated listening rooms, and describes this model as suited to music and home cinema alike. Five finishes are listed - Studio Black, Studio White, Studio Navy, Studio Charcoal and Studio Green - each with a matching magnetic grille. Within the range the tower is the choice for buyers who want deeper bass extension and higher output than the Evara bookshelf pair can give.
Pairing
Krix recommends 50 to 200 W RMS of amplifier power. Impedance is nominally 6 ohm with a stated minimum of 3.5 ohm. Connection is through dual gold-plated binding posts that allow bi-wiring or bi-amping. For a multichannel system Krix designs the Graphix Evara centre to work alongside the Evara bookshelf and floorstanding models, uses the Dynamix Evara for side and rear channels, and offers the Seismix 1 Evara and Seismix 3D Evara subwoofers.
Alternatives
The Krix Harmonix Mk2 is a larger three-way floorstander from the hi-fi catalogue, rated at 90 dB with a 1,040 mm tall cabinet.
