The OPUS 1 is a self-powered horn loudspeaker for floor placement from Avantgarde Acoustic of Germany, introduced at High End Vienna 2026 as a compact route into the brand's horn technology. Amplification and crossover are built in, so it needs only a balanced signal from a preamplifier, DAC or streamer. The price was set at EUR 10,500 excluding VAT, and its American show price was USD 18,000 per pair. It has a compact footprint for a horn design.

Key specs that matter

Overall frequency response is quoted as 35 Hz to 22 kHz, with the horn section rated at 103 dB per watt and a driver impedance of 8 ohm. The crossover point sits at 700 Hz. The bass driver has its own dedicated amplifier, and the horn gets 10 W in class AB, of which the first watt runs in class A. Each cabinet stands 110 cm tall, 35 cm across and 36 cm front to back, and weighs 39 kg.

Engineering and use context

A spherical wave horn 350 mm in diameter and 150 mm deep covers the band from the crossover point to 20 kHz. It is fed by the OH1, a 1 inch compression driver with a light ring diaphragm. Below it sits the OBM10, a 10 inch die-cast bass driver with a three inch voice coil and a concave paper cone, working in a rear-ported bass reflex enclosure up to the horn. DSP manages the crossover and tunes the bass. The housing combines MDF and aluminium for stiffness and damping. Finishes are white with silver or black with black, a brushed metal front panel, and optional horn colours. The rear panel carries an XLR line input and an antenna used for over-the-air firmware updates.

Pairing

Because each OPUS 1 contains its own amplifiers, neither a power amplifier nor speaker cables are part of the system. Each cabinet needs mains power and a balanced interconnect, fed from a preamplifier, a digital converter that can adjust level, or a network player with analogue XLR outputs. The DSP crossover sends the bass amplifier and the horn amplifier only their own frequency band, so no external filtering is required. A compact system can therefore be built from a single network player and the two speakers, while owners of a separate preamplifier keep it in the chain and use its balanced outputs.

Alternatives

The Avantgarde DUO SD is a larger horn floorstander with a 670 mm midrange horn and a powered 12 inch bass section, driven by an external amplifier for the horns.
