The MICHELANGELO is one of the four full-range ribbon floorstanding loudspeakers from Alsyvox, alongside the Tintoretto, Botticelli and Caravaggio. The company, founded by designer Daniele Coen, builds its speakers by hand in Valencia, Spain. Coen started with DIY dipole experiments in 1984 and introduced full ribbon designs in 2016, and the Michelangelo was shown at the 2025 Munich show and was announced at USD 458,000.

Key specs that matter

Each channel is a three-panel symmetrical array. Two outer panels each carry a flat ribbon woofer 320 mm wide, and a centre panel between them holds five ribbon drivers - two 45 mm wide midranges, two 25 mm wide tweeters and a 9 mm wide supertweeter in the middle. The quoted response is 18 Hz to 40 kHz, the nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and sensitivity is given as 96 to 98 dB depending on the crossover settings. The whole array is 2.03 m tall and 1.26 m wide, while the panels are only 5.4 cm deep, so the array is wide and tall yet very shallow. The panels of one channel weigh 270 kg, and the outboard crossovers add another 70 kg.

Engineering and use context

As in every Alsyvox model, the Michelangelo is a magnetostatic dipole in which ribbons cover every band, and no cone drivers are used. Splitting the low frequencies across two separate woofer panels either side of the centre column gives a symmetrical layout, with the mid and treble ribbons stacked on the vertical axis between them. Each band above the bass therefore has its own dedicated ribbon width, narrowing as frequency rises. Doubling the midrange and tweeter ribbons also spreads the work over a larger radiating area. The crossovers sit outside the panels in their own enclosures, and the adjustable settings change the efficiency within the stated window. As a dipole, the array also sends energy backwards, and with a width of more than 1.2 m per channel it needs a large room, well beyond a typical 20 m2 space, with free space behind and beside each speaker.

Pairing

A sensitivity in the high 90s is unusual for a planar loudspeaker and opens the door to low-powered amplifiers, and with a low nominal impedance a unit that copes easily with low impedances makes the most sense. The separate crossover boxes need their own floor space and short runs to the panels, which should be planned together with the amplifier position.

Alternatives

The Alsyvox Caravaggio is the next ribbon floorstander below it in the same four-model range.
