The Mezza V.2 in this floorstanding version, sold as the Grand Mezza v2, is a 2.5-way loudspeaker from the Italian maker Opera Loudspeakers, which builds its speakers at Dosson di Casier, a town just outside Treviso. It belongs to the updated Classica line and is aimed at small to medium rooms. The US list price is USD 5,999 per pair.
Key specs that matter
A 26 mm soft dome tweeter with a double ferrite magnet and aluminium faceplate works with two 150 mm black anodised aluminium cone woofers on ferrite magnets, with crossover points at 250 and 2000 Hz. Sensitivity is 92 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, rated response is 48 Hz to 28 kHz at -3 dB, and nominal impedance is 6 ohms with a minimum of 3.8 ohms. Opera quotes 100 W as the maximum power without clipping. The cabinet alone measures 20.1 x 105 x 37.5 cm, or 26.2 x 110.7 x 42.7 cm with the base, and weighs 35 kg.
Engineering and use context
The woofers were developed with Scan-Speak, the Danish driver maker. The tall, narrow enclosure is shaped to limit internal reflections and the output of vibrating side walls, and Opera used accelerometer and laser measurements to place internal reinforcements at two critical points. The first internal chamber wall is sharply angled to spread internal reflections, and the cabinet uses a special high-density polyurethane. Bass is loaded by what Opera calls a dual-chamber, series-connected resonator, which the maker says gives a gentler roll-off at the lowest frequencies and reduced driver excursion, and it vents through two rear ports. The crossover sits on a circuit board designed in-house, with extremely low-loss inductors and thick high-purity copper wiring, and a dedicated network for the two woofers, which work almost entirely in parallel. Finishes are Concrete Grey and Rosewood, and the warranty is five years.
Pairing
Opera recommends amplifiers rated between 25 and 130 W. With its low impedance minimum, the amplifier should be comfortable with 4 ohm loads. Both ports fire backwards, so a position flush against a wall is a poor choice.
Alternatives
The Opera Quinta v2 is the larger three-way floorstanding model of the Classica line, with a 150 mm coated fibreglass midrange, two 180 mm aluminium cone woofers, crossover points at 250 and 2300 Hz and a rated response down to 42 Hz.
