The Lynx is a three-way floorstander engineered and assembled by Rockport Technologies in South Thomaston, Maine. Its bass loading uses a port at the back and its enclosure is a monocoque aluminium shell with viscoelastic damping. It was offered in Satin Silver Metallic or Satin Titanium Metallic as standard finishes. US pricing was quoted at USD 83,000 to 94,000 per pair depending on finish, and the warranty runs two years, extended to five years with registration.
Key specs that matter
A 10-inch woofer and a 6-inch midrange both use carbon fibre sandwich composite cones, and the 1-inch beryllium dome tweeter sits in a diamond-machined aluminium waveguide. Rockport rates the response at 23 Hz to 30 kHz at the -3 dB points, with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity of 90 dB SPL at 2.83 V. The minimum amplifier power stated by the maker is 50 W. Each cabinet stands 1,219 mm tall, 315 mm wide (447 mm across the feet) and 594 mm deep, and weighs 138 kg, or 213 kg in its crate.
Engineering and use context
The enclosure follows Rockport's DAMSTIF3 approach. It is formed from a single massive aluminium casting with integral internal ribs, so the maker describes it as having no joinery and no fasteners. A proprietary high-hysteresis damping material is bonded to every internal surface, and the shell has no parallel sides, a measure aimed at reducing standing waves inside the box. Point-to-point wiring is used for the crossover, which is encapsulated in epoxy and housed in an acoustically isolated compartment within the plinth. The rear reflex port is machined from metal and ends in a flared outlet. Machined cones screw into the integrated plinth and allow the level and rake of the cabinet to be adjusted, with locking knobs to hold the setting once it is found. The narrow body gains a wider footprint from outriggers.
Pairing
With the low nominal impedance, current capability into low loads matters more here than raw wattage, although the moderate minimum power figure means a very large amplifier is not mandatory. Because the port vents to the rear, spacing from the rear wall deserves attention when planning placement in a space of around 20 m2 or larger. The weight of each unit means delivery and positioning should be planned with more than one person.
Alternatives
The Rockport Orion moves up to a 13-inch woofer, a 7-inch midrange and a carbon fibre over cast aluminium enclosure.
