Operly's Intelligence III is a one-driver horn design from a manufacturer based in Duesseldorf, Germany. The company first appeared in public at High End Munich 2022, and the Intelligence III was the model with which it entered the UK market in 2023. The numeral marks the third generation of the design, which is the only loudspeaker Operly lists. Launch prices were GBP 33,000, EUR 37,000 and USD 40,000 per pair, and the later European price reached EUR 45,000.
Key specs that matter
The Intelligence III works as a passive one-way floorstander built around a hand-made full-range dynamic driver. Operly quotes a response of 41.5 Hz to 17.5 kHz, sensitivity of 100 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohm. Each cabinet measures 572 mm wide, 1,590 mm tall and 800 mm deep, and it weighs 67 kg.
Engineering and use context
Operly uses a patented full-range horn system in which the driver feeds both a forward horn and a backward horn, with no connection between the two paths. Separating them lets the front horn be matched exactly to the diaphragm. The driver itself uses a short voice coil of small diameter working in a large magnetic gap, a layout chosen to keep the magnetic field uniform over the coil's travel. The body is a monocoque of high-grade glass fibre, vacuum-formed for strength, with a uniform wall thickness of 15 mm along the full length of the backward horn. Its side walls are angled so that no two surfaces run parallel, which keeps standing waves from forming inside. The backward horn is also angled so that the axes of the front and rear horns meet 2.7 m in front of the speakers, where the listening zone begins. The width and depth were chosen to match the footprint of an office chair. A three-point base spreads the load evenly because the centre of gravity sits in the middle, so the speaker stays steady on an uneven floor. Finishes follow the German automotive colour range, including two-tone schemes, and UK options include Tuxedo, Yellowstone, British Racing Green, Cream and Superfine.
Pairing
Operly recommends an amplifier of just 3 to 20 W, which points toward single-ended triode amplifiers and other low-output valve designs, since the high sensitivity turns a few watts into loud listening levels. High-power solid-state amplification sits outside the stated window, so the output of the chosen electronics, not their current reserve, is the figure to check first.
Alternatives
Operly makes no other loudspeaker model, so the Intelligence III is the brand's only floorstanding design.
