The GLE 70 is a passive floorstanding loudspeaker in Canton's GLE series, a range the German maker positions as its entry into full-size stereo and home cinema systems. It sold at EUR 499 per speaker and has since been replaced by the GLE 70 S2, with the original now listed by Canton as no longer available. Canton describes the styling as modern and discreet. The series spans floorstanding, bookshelf, centre and surround models, and a GLE 90 sits above the GLE 80 in the tower line with double-cone woofers.

Key specs that matter

The GLE 70 is a 2.5-way bass reflex design. Two 174 mm woofers with titanium cones and wave surrounds sit below a 25 mm aluminium-manganese tweeter dome. Crossover action hands off at 300 Hz and at 3,200 Hz. The stated range spans 25 Hz to 40,000 Hz, and power handling is 110 watts nominal and 170 watts music. Impedance is specified as 4 to 8 ohms, and efficiency is 89.5 dB measured at 2.83 V and 1 metre. The cabinet is 19 cm wide, 96 cm high and 29 cm deep, and each speaker weighs 15.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

Canton builds these drivers on sturdy polycarbonate baskets and pairs them with powerful magnet drives. The surrounds are of the latest triple-folded wave type, which the company uses on woofer cones to allow long excursion while keeping distortion low. In the 2.5-way arrangement the two woofers share the lowest octaves, and above the lower crossover only one of them carries on upward until the tweeter joins in. This approach keeps the enclosure narrow while still giving it two bass cones of full size. The front grille is a fabric cover held by magnets, so there are no visible fixing points on the baffle when it is removed. The finishes offered were Black Decor and White Decor.

Pairing

The good efficiency means moderate amplifier power is enough to drive the GLE 70, while an impedance that can fall to 4 ohms suggests choosing an amplifier or AV receiver rated for 4 ohm loads. Because the GLE series also includes matching centre, bookshelf and surround models, the GLE 70 can take the left and right front positions in a multichannel setup driven by an AV receiver.

Alternatives

Canton's GLE 80 is the taller GLE tower with a three-way layout, with an extra midrange driver above its two woofers in a 100 cm tall cabinet.
