Eva was one of the first two floorstanding models from Closer Acoustics, a small Polish maker founded by Jacek Grodecki, a collector of Lenco L75 turntables and a member of the LencoHeaven enthusiast community. His interest in French audio led him to choose Supravox drivers, a brand he also distributed in Poland. At the time the company was based in Sosnowiec, and a pair of Eva cost PLN 16,000 in Poland. The cabinets are made by his brother, a carpenter, to Jacek's own design.
Key specs that matter
The only driver is a Supravox 215 Signature Bicone, wired straight to the terminals with no crossover. The maker's figures are 93 dB sensitivity, an 8 ohm nominal impedance and a power rating of 35 W. Height is 1170 mm, width 305 mm and depth 440 mm, and every speaker weighs 43 kg, so moving a pair calls for two or better three people.
Engineering and use context
The 215 Signature Bicone is a slightly revised form of the classic Supravox 215 RTF Bicone. Supravox dates from 1956, and in 1964 it won the tender to equip the studios of Radio Television Francaise, after which 215 mm full-range monitors were used by ORTF, RAI, RTL and Europe 1. Bicone means a double cone, with a small central whizzer horn that helps the top octaves. The 215 mm cone is light and made of paper pulp, and its surround is part of the cone rather than a separate rubber ring. The enclosure is built from thick birch plywood and was offered in natural teak veneer, with an optional version carrying a painted motif. The walls are not parallel - the back slopes so the cabinet is wider at the top than at the floor. Inside, the driver is loaded by a labyrinth-like path that contains no damping, and internal partitions add stiffness. The path vents through narrow slots at the base of the back panel and underneath the speaker, so the height of the supplied brass spikes has to be set carefully. The binding posts sit on a brass nameplate, with a second plate bearing the logo on the front. Each speaker travels in a made-to-measure case lined with hard foam, together with a fabric cover.
Pairing
Eva is meant for single-ended class A valve amplifiers in the 2 to 8 W range, where the high sensitivity lets a small output stage do the job.
Alternatives
The Closer Acoustics Adam is the related floorstander that replaces the Bicone with the single-cone Supravox 215 Signature and adds a B&C DE35 horn tweeter, reaching 94 dB.
