The EOS 5 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Gryphon Audio Designs of Denmark with three ways and four drivers. Its public debut came at the Hong Kong Audio Visual Show 2023, with availability from early 2024 at a list price of EUR 42,800, around USD 49,800, and GBP 41,500 per pair in the UK. Each speaker measures 46.8 cm wide, 47.2 cm deep and 130 cm tall and weighs 50.6 kg, and the enclosure is handcrafted locally to Danish furniture standards in the faceted style of the smaller EOS 2.

Key specs that matter

All four drivers were developed for this model. Two 9.5 inch (240 mm) woofers and a 6.5 inch (165 mm) midrange use TPCD thin-ply carbon fibre cones with Impulse Optimizer Rings, a feature first used in the EOS 2, and the cones are made by a fabricator of Formula 1 components. A 29 mm beryllium dome tweeter was engineered for the higher crossover point. The crossover splits the signal at 500 Hz and 2.5 kHz. Gryphon quotes 20 Hz to 40 kHz within +/- 2 dB, 90 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V and a nominal impedance of 4 Ohm, falling to a minimum of 2.9 Ohm at 80 Hz.

Engineering and use context

The PCS (Progressive Curved Slope) crossover uses second and fourth-order slopes with a progressive rising characteristic, and Gryphon states it maximises power handling while keeping phase response linear across the frequency range. Because the EOS 5 is larger and covers a wider bandwidth than the EOS 2, Gryphon developed a Line-Dampened Porting System to smooth airflow through the rear reflex port with tunnel damping for the bass drivers, and the sculpted front baffle and faceted shape are meant to diffuse standing waves inside the enclosure. A tweeter level switch with three settings gives 0, +2 or +3 dB to adjust for off-axis dispersion. Custom adjustable spikes with removable integrated dampers suit both carpet and hard floors. Finishes are Soul Red Crystal, High Gloss Black, Stealth Grey and S-Mat Black, a new self-healing matte paint introduced with this model that can be repaired with parchment paper and a low-heat iron.

Pairing

A quartet of proprietary binding posts, the same as those on the Gryphon Apex power amplifiers, allows single-wire or bi-wire connection. Because impedance dips well below nominal in the upper bass, the partnering amplifier needs to stay stable with a low bass-region load.
