The Dymension DM80 is the largest tower of Definitive Technology's Dymension series. It follows the company's established approach of combining a bipolar driver array with a built-in powered subwoofer, so the tower delivers full-range bass without a separate subwoofer cabinet. It is designed as the main speaker of both stereo and home theatre systems.

Key specs that matter

The bipolar array uses two 1 in aluminium oxide dome tweeters and four 5.25 in BDSS mid/bass drivers, arranged as identical front and rear sets. The integrated subwoofer section has a 12 in driver and two 12 in passive radiators, powered by a GaN FET amplifier rated at 400 W (500 W peak). Frequency response is 28 Hz to 23 kHz (-3 dB), sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V, nominal impedance is 4 ohms and recommended amplifier power is 50 to 300 W. It stands 1255 mm tall, 287 mm wide and 407 mm deep, at 37.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

In the bipolar array, each face carries two mid/bass drivers with a tweeter between them, and the rear array has output equal to the front. The rear output reflects off room walls, widening the sound field. A rear-array attenuation switch lowers the rear output by 6 dB for placement near a wall, and bi-amping allows the balance to be varied. The BDSS mid/bass drivers use a balanced double-surround system, and a Linear Response Waveguide smooths off-axis dispersion. The 3XR architecture combines the powered subwoofer with two opposed passive radiators, giving extension with less distortion than a port. Intelligent Bass Control uses digital processing to blend the subwoofer with the mids and highs and allows bass adjustment of +/-12 dB. Foot spikes and pads allow levelling on carpet or hard floors. The DM90 height module, certified for Dolby Atmos and compatible with DTS:X, fits on top to add overhead effects. The speaker is voice-matched to other Definitive Technology series. This lets owners mix Dymension, Dymension CI and Mythos models in one home theatre, including the DM30 centre channel designed for the DM80. The black cloth grille is not removable.

Pairing

Because the subwoofer is powered internally, the external amplifier or AV receiver drives only the bipolar array, since the bass section has its own amplifier. The 4 ohm rating calls for a receiver that is stable into 4 ohms. The DM80 suits rooms of 25 to 45 m2.
