The Dhyana is a floorstanding loudspeaker from PranaFidelity of Denver, Colorado, built as a 2-way quasi line array and designed by Steven Norber. It was shown at T.H.E. Show in 2023 and is priced at USD 19,500 per pair. At that first showing the company had released only limited technical information on the design.
Key specs that matter
Four 152.4 mm mid/woofers are stacked in a vertical column around a single 30 mm tweeter, and all four receive the same signal from the crossover. PranaFidelity quotes a frequency response of 28 Hz to 23 kHz and adds that in-room response extends the bass further. Sensitivity is 88.5 dB at 1 W and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, and the minimum is 6.1 ohm at 172 Hz. The company states distortion below 1 percent THD, counting the 2nd to 5th harmonics, from 25 Hz upward. Each cabinet measures 1219 mm high, 278 mm wide and 455 mm deep and weighs 45 kg.
Engineering and use context
The mid/woofers are made to the designer's specifications by SB Acoustics and use proprietary damped and coated paper cones. The tweeter is a textile soft dome driven by dual neodymium magnets. The crossover is a mixed slope network, an asymmetrical design that combines filter slopes of different orders, working together with a high-order acoustic roll-off. The design takes each driver's natural low-pass and high-pass roll-off into account, so the combined acoustic result falls more steeply than the network specification alone would suggest. The enclosure is Baltic birch throughout, built from 800 layers, and its internal bracing follows proportions taken from the Fibonacci series. The front baffle is a high-density, resin-impregnated wood, and the cabinet is dual ported. Three toggle switches let the owner adjust treble extension and midrange character. The company's speaker catalogue also includes the standmount Dhara, the Bhava, the Vayu/fs and the Fifty90, with a Satmata prototype announced as upcoming.
Pairing
The high impedance floor and moderate sensitivity present a benign load, so the Dhyana does not demand an amplifier built for low impedances. PranaFidelity also builds the purna/ma power amplifier and the purna/ca preamplifier, which allows a system drawn entirely from one maker in Denver.
Alternatives
The PranaFidelity Vayu/fs is an earlier floorstanding 2-way quasi line array from the brand, about 121 cm tall.
